River Ridge homecoming Sept. 19-23

Celebration of homecoming activities is taking place at River Ridge High School next week, Sept. 19 to the 23. The theme is “Board Games” and the football game will be against Shullsburg on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Wednesday evening will kick off community participation with a night of family fun and entertainment at the high school. A color run will start the night, from 6 to 7 p.m., on the Fitness Trail, near the softball field at River Ridge High School. A soup and sandwich meal, provided by a Safe and Stable Family Grant, will be available at the same time.

Also Wednesday evening will be the skit, lip sync, and coronation program in the high school gym, beginning with naming of royalty at 7:30 p.m. A 50/50 raffle will take place later.

Wauzeka-Steuben hosts homecoming this week

It’s homecoming week in the Wauzeka-Steuben School District.

Activities essentially begin on Wednesday, Sept. 14 evening, with the powder puff football game. The freshmen-sophomore game starts at 6:30 p.m., and the junior-senior competition is at 7:15 p.m. A community bonfire will follow the games.

On Friday, Sept. 16, a pep rally will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Doll Gym. This includes skits, the athletic teams, cheers, the pep band, etc. At 4:30 p.m., the parade will be held in downtown Wauzeka, followed by tailgating at the football field at 5 p.m. The football game against Kickapoo-La Farge will start at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, the homecoming dance will take place in the Doll Gym from 8 to 11 p.m., with the grand march at 9 p.m.

COTR to stay in Bridgeport

Country on the River organizers have withdrawn their request from the city of Prairie du Chien to relocate to St. Feriole Island in 2017, according to an email the city received Tuesday morning.

For now, the country music festival, owned by Townsquare Live Events, will remain at the Bridgeport property where it’s been since 2012. The request to use the island will no longer be on the city’s Sept. 20 council agenda.

According to Prairie du Chien City Administrator Aaron Kramer, an email sent by Matt LaRose, vice president of Townsquare Live Events, read: “Thank you for all of your hard work on assisting us through the relocation process to St. Feriole Island. At this time, we are going to withdraw our request to relocate on the island.

“The Wisconsin DOT has given us our variance and allowed us to stay at our current site.

“I do encourage you and all members of the council to come out this year and see the event.”

Crawford County to hold flag disposal on Sept. 26

On Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m., the Crawford County American Legion will again hold its annual flag disposal program. This program will be held in conjunction with the regular meeting of the Crawford County Council of the American Legion.

The Caya-Bunders Post #68, of Prairie du Chien, will sponsor the program this year in Prairie du Chien.

Ken McCormick, Crawford County American Legion commander, asks all county residents who have or are flying American flags to take a look at them. If they are worn or tattered, please turn them in so they can be properly retired.

Old worn flags may be turned in to any Crawford County American Legion member or at the Crawford County Veterans Service Office, 225 N. Beaumont Rd., Suite 137, in Prairie du Chien, before Friday, Sept. 23.

Nasal flu mist no longer an option, vaccine clinics slated in communities and schools

After data showed the flu mist nasal spray to have poor or relatively low effectiveness from 2013 to 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) announced that the nasal spray is no longer available at this time.

 “While it is disappointing to see data suggesting that the nasal spray vaccine is not working as well as expected, we are pleased that flu shots did perform well last season,” State Health Officer Karen McKeown said. “We expect that there will be enough of the injectable vaccine available for the 2016 to 17 season so everyone 6 months and older can protect themselves and their loved ones against the flu.”

Man’s blood donations affect hundreds of lives

Between 368 and 552 people have received the life-changing gift of blood from one humble, local man, who has donated 23 gallons of blood at Prairie du Chien Community Blood Drives since the early 1970s.

Chuck Johll, 72, of Prairie du Chien, started giving blood while working at 3M, since the company generously allows its employees to receive paid time off while donating.

“It was a few years after I started at 3M,” he recalled, proudly pointing out that he worked there 32 years. Currently semi-retired, Johll has been employed part-time at Walmart for the past 11 years. He takes plenty of time to indulge in his passion of golfing regularly, even mowing the greens at the Prairie du Chien Country Club.

Johll agrees that his energetic, hard-working nature has played a part in his good health, which has allowed him to achieve those 23 gallons.

Fr. Fagan’s medical work presented on video

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 5:30 p.m., Fr. Paul Fagan will give a video presentation on the medical work in his parish of St. Peter in Nkololo, Diocese of Shinyanga, Tanzania. Please note the change in time and place from past years. The presentation will be  in the new Holy Family Parish Hall at St. John Church in Prairie du Chien.

Exciting news! On June 1, 2016, Dr. Jude Kidando performed the first operation in the new operating suites building at Songambele Hospital at St. Peter Parish in Nkololo, Tanzania. Many operations have followed.

This week’s presentation will also feature the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday at the Diocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy at St. Peter Parish in Nkololo. Over 2,000 people came to pray. The Mass was presided over by the Bishop of Shinyanga Diocese, Liberatus Sangu, and concelebrated by over 30 priests of the diocese.

The public is welcome. Come with friends and enjoy the evening.

Inmate on Huber release does not return

An inmate on Huber release was arrested and returned to the Crawford County Jail Sunday, Sept. 11, after he was on the loose for more than 36 hours, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

Trent Gilbertson was released from the jail on Friday, Sept. 9, at 6:28 a.m., for Huber work release, as he was doing construction in the Prairie du Chien area. As of Saturday, Sept. 10, at 7 a.m., he had not returned. He was being held on a warrant for failure to support child.

The Prairie du Chien Police Department and surrounding counties were notified that Gilbertson had not returned as scheduled.

Finally, at 6:45 p.m., Sunday, Gilbertson was arrested after the sheriff’s department received a tip that he was staying at a residence in Prairie du Chien. Prairie du Chien police responded and arrested Gilbertson, who was intoxicated.

No one injured, no citations in railway maintenance car versus semi crash

A railway maintenance car crashed into a semi at the East Frederick Street railroad crossing in Prairie du Chien last Wednesday morning, Sept. 7, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department. The semi was lifted slightly due to the impact and weight behind the tamper car when they collided, though no one was injured in the accident. No citations were written by law enforcement.

The crash occured about 10:45 a.m., when Zachary Berman, 29, of Spokane, Wash., was operating a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway tamper and heading east on the tracks as part of a regularly scheduled BNSF maintenance crew. As a result of the morning rain, the wet track became a factor in Berman’s attempt to slow down and stop the equipment, according to the accident report. He was unable to stop before colliding with a 2003 International semi, owned by Moore’s Trucking and operated by Lesley Lathrop, 56, of Gays Mills.

Family hosts fundraisers in anticipation of Prairie du Chien PD’s K-9 dog

The Farmer family, including four sisters and their mom from Prairie du Chien, took fundraising for the anticipated PdC Police Department K-9 unit to a whole new level this summer, and they engaged the public in supporting their fundraising efforts along the way.

First, they hosted three days of concessions in May, June and July at Nelson True Value, which donated the space and propane to cook the food sold. Second, they got Zinkle’s Piggly Wiggly on board with sponsoring public donation containers, paws on the wall and employee jeans day. The Zinkle family contributed monetarily, while their company members and customers were generous in their donations as well. Third, in August, they organized a volleyball tournament, from which the top two winners, the Pustinas and the Butterburgers, gave their prize money back to the effort.

In total, $2,090.79 was raised for the police department to use in adding the K-9 unit.
