Regal Marina family shares its side of the story

It’s business as usual this boating season at Regal Marina. At least, it’s mostly as usual, considering electricity to the docks was disconnected by the city of Prairie du Chien, upon state recommendation, one year ago in May and has not been restored. (Boaters can use on board generators and the buildings still have power for service needs.)

It’s well-known in Prairie du Chien area communities that the Regal family and the city government have been at odds for years. Only in the last few years have their disagreements become news. In January, the contention turned into a legal battle.

The generations of Regals who have stake in the marina business have remained quiet about their side of the story—until now. The family requested an opportunity to tell their story and, alongside a half-dozen loyal boaters, April 5, they sat down to do so.

Traditionally, as the weather warms up, more and more anglers take to their area waters to test their skills and try their luck. Each year is a bit different, but Mississippi River anglers in Pools 9 and 10 should expect a healthy fishery in 2017 despite relatively low numbers of certain species netted by DNR electrofishing crews this past fall.

Man’s small gesture of kindness helps out another

The world can seem like an unfriendly place at times. Still, a man from the Seneca area has a story that not only brightened his day but might also encourage others to pay it forward.

Rick Lakin was at the Prairie du Chien Public Library on April 7, working on the Internet and trying to post his bicycle for sale on Craigslist. He was talking to the kind librarian about his personal experiences as a 15-year throat cancer survivor and about how he’s now healthy, but having difficulty finding a job due to his health history.

“I was telling her how I was broke and want to get a job, but nobody will hire me because they don’t want me on their insurance,” said Lakin, who was a machine automation sales representative for 40 years.

As he was talking, a gentleman who had been reading the newspaper in the library came walking past, held out a 100 dollar bill and said, “You dropped this,” and kept on walking, out of the library.

Firefighters association donates toward Prairie du Chien’s new fire truck

The Prairie du Chien Firefighters Association was represented at the Prairie du Chien Common Council meeting Tuesday, April 11, to present a donation of $11,600 to the city toward the purchase of the new fire truck, which is currently being built. $10,000 was raised by the association and the additional funds were contributed by an anonymous family that wanted to pay for a bell to be added to the truck for nostalgic reasons. The family will receive the bell back once the truck has reached its service capacity in Prairie du Chien. The money donated was raised through the association’s fundraisers—mainly Christmas tree sales, pancake breakfasts and chili suppers—at which the community generously showed its support. Since there were certain “bells and whistles” desired by the fire department above and beyond the city’s budget for the new truck, the donation will be used toward those features. Mere idea of third railroad track could stall 2018 Marquette Road project again

Reconstruction of Marquette Road, from Mooney Street to La Pointe Street, in Prairie du Chien, is on schedule for 2018. The project, which was originally scheduled for 2017, flip-flopped years several times due to the question of state funding. However, as the construction season begins, it appears 2018 is the plan.

While the Department of Transportation’s plans include the road and storm sewer, part of the city’s responsibility is to determine Community Sensitive Design (CSD) amenities, which aesthetically dress up the roadway. The DOT will reimburse the city 100 percent for its CSD expenses that include a 10-foot asphalt trail, 5-foot chain-link fence alongside the railroad tracks, and trees, among other items. The proposed designs were submitted to the DOT in August 2016, by the city’s engineer, Vierbicher Associates.

Preliminary hearing set for driver involved in double-fatal crash

The driver who was involved in the accident that killed Kirk U’Ren and Jenni Steiner in Madison Feb. 12, is expected in Dane County Court for his preliminary hearing, Thursday, April 20, at 9 a.m. Charges against Brandon Ballweg were filed in Dane County Monday, according to Wisconsin Circuit Court Access. (A request for the criminal complaint was made to the Dane County Clerk of Circuit Court Tuesday, though processing could take as many as 10 business days.)

Ballweg faces two counts of second-degree reckless homicide, two charges of homicide by vehicular use-controlled substance, three counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, one count of reckless driving causing bodily harm and one count of causing injury while operating-controlled substance (PAC <0.15). These include seven felony charges, of varying degrees, and two misdemeanors.
