Two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 61

On Friday, Oct. 6, at 1:10 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a two-vehicle accident on Highway 61 with no injuries and no blockage in Scott Township.

Jean G. Troxel, 49, Soldiers Grove, was traveling southbound on Highway 61 in a 2004 Buick. The Troxel vehicle was traveling behind a 2013 Subaru being operated by Brenda A. Foust, 52, East Dubuque, Ill. The Foust vehicle was slowing down for a vehicle making a left turn onto Long Ago Lane. The Troxel vehicle was unable to avoid the Foust vehicle rear-ending it.  

Both drivers claimed no injuries at the scene and both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

Crawford County to get FEMA funding

Steuben received major flooding following the July 19 storm. A county road in Steuben was just one item of public infrastructure that was severely damaged in the county. President Trump on Tuesday gave his major disaster declaration for Crawford and 10 other counties.

Crawford County will receive $353,476 in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding to help cover the costs of damage to public infrastructure as a result of the severe storm of July 19.

Attempted murder trial begins in Crawford County

The trial began Tuesday morning in Crawford County Circuit Court for a Dubuque man charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide in the severe beating of another Dubuque man at the Rock on the River music festival in the town of Bridgeport in July of 2013.

Anthony W. Runde, 36, is also charged with aggravated battery. Runde faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

The trial continued at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Oct. 11.

Joshua W. Milligan, 32, sustained severe brain injury as a result of the alleged altercation on July 13, 2013.

According to the criminal complaint, the assault happened near the campground portable toilets on the Rock on the River grounds.

A lieutenant with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was informed that Joshua Milligan was discovered on the festival grounds lying sprawled out on the ground and unconscious, the complaint said.

Soldiers Grove nursing home faces sale rather than closure

Sannes Skogdalen Heim nursing home in Soldiers Grove is owned by Community Health Services, which also runs the Prairie Maison nursing home in Prairie du Chien.

North Shore Healthcare is in the process of acquiring the Sannes Skogdalen-Heim Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove, according to David Mills, a managing partner of that Milwaukee-based company.

North Shore Healthcare currently owns 44 long-term care nursing homes in Wisconsin. They essentially more than doubled the number of facilities under their control, when a deal to acquire 28 facilities from the failing Fortis Management went into effect at midnight Sunday, Oct. 1.

With that acquisition, North Shore Healthcare now has more than 3,000 employees, Mills noted. By November 1, the company plans to have closed on the Sannes Skogdalen acquisition.

Over 3,000 merrymakers are expected to be in Prairie du Chien for Oktoberfest this year. The free and family-friendly day of celebration continues to expand and is once again poised to offer more than “three cheers” for everyone.

Oktoberfest 2017 will take place Saturday, Oct. 21, at the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The festivities will kick off with a parade at 10 a.m., beginning at People’s State Bank downtown and following a route to the Oktoberfest grounds. To join the parade entries, participants can line up near the bank at 9 a.m.
This year’s Festmaster is Dan Winkleski, dedicated Oktoberfest volunteer and musician. He will appear in the parade alongside some of the day’s famed musical guests and the most festive local businesses and organizations, children and pets. The Wisconsin Association of School Boards has set Oct. 1-7 as Wisconsin School Board Week, a time to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in its community. Area school districts are joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate Wisconsin School Board Week to honor local board members for their commitment to their schools and the students.

100 years of memories remain vivid for local centenarian

A lifetime spanning 100 years is a milestone most of us can only imagine. But Juanita Martin is living it. She will turn 100 years old on Thursday, Oct. 5.

Juanita received a certificate commemorating her century of life, signed by Gov. Scott Walker. Before deciding exactly where to hang it in her room at Prairie Maison nursing home the other day, she sat down to reflect on the highlights of her life.

Juanita was born into the Vogel family in 1917. She spent her childhood in Mt. Sterling, where her parents Charles and Edith Vogel had a small business. She had two brothers and one sister. They went to Mt. Sterling grade school.

She remembers riding in a mail truck to Lynxville to stay with her grandma at the Vogel Hotel. “I always stayed in room number 4 upstairs. I used to play with the girls who lived [in Lynxville].”

Prairie man charged with intent to deliver

A 26-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, and one count of attempting to flee or elude a traffic officer.

Christian Weber faces up to 16 years in prison and fines totaling $35,000 if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, while a Prairie du Chien police officer was following a vehicle, the vehicle accelerated, drove through a stop sign, and led the officer on a chase that reached speeds of 60 mph in a 25 mph zone.

The vehicle was stopped and searched. A zip-lock baggie containing several smaller baggies was found, many of which contained meth, according to the complaint.

Weber told the officer that he was having financial troubles so he went back to doing what he knows best, which is selling meth, the complaint said.
