A mock reminder: Be smart, safe

Isaac Blum played the "seriously injured" victim in River Ridge's mock crash last Thursday, April 19.

Deputy Dan Reuter hollers at James Breuer, aka the drunken driver in the mock crash, to blow as hard as he can during a "breathalyzer test," done in front of his classmates to show what happens when a driver is suspected to have been drinking. (Photos by Correne Martin)

Funeral director Nathan Popp rolls the "deceased victim" in front of the student body, as he explains what his role is at a scene where someone is pronounced dead.

Key participants in the mock crash included (from left) makeup artist Jordan Mink, Deputy Dan Reuter, Kerrigan Trautsch, Denny Cathman, Isaac Blum and James Breuer.

There’s screeching, a loud boom, the cracking and popping of glass breaking and metal bending. You’re screaming and crying and feeling your body being jerked around. There’s the smell of coolant and other chemicals.

Then...silence...

This experience is a nightmare of a lifetime. It’s not only the sounds that will remain with you, when you’re involved in a severe crash. But, in a drunken driving crash that ends in injuries, even death, the memories and consequences—if you live—will haunt you forever.

TNT Gymnastics new facility open in Prairie du Chien

Some of the older girls practice their routines for regional gymnastics, which are happening this weekend in Minneapolis, while the younger ones get their time in too.

A group of TNT gymnasts stretches in preparation for class on the new floor mat, complete with springs beneath it.

With 8,200 square feet of space, there’s plenty of interaction to be had at TNT Gymnastics gym at 1890 E. La Pointe St., in Prairie du Chien.

In addition to the traditional beams, floor, bars and vault, a climbing wall, in-ground trampolines, climbing ropes, foam pit, obstacle course and toddler rooms have been added at the new TNT facility.

After 18 years of bouncing around to Prairie du Chien’s various gym spaces, TNT Gymnastics opened its own 8,200-square-foot pristine gym with the latest industry equipment at 1890 E. La Pointe St. on Feb. 25.

“It’s almost double the size we had,” remarked owner Tracy Troxel, comparing the new building to the business’ former space in a storage building next to Prairie Cinema. “We’ve already seen 25 additional members, including eight new boys. People are coming from other gyms. The kids currently taking classes have been able to improve so much more too. They’ve gained a lot more strength with the additional opportunities that have opened up.”

'Robin Hood,' an action-packed, comedic adventure

Pictured, a well-practiced fight scene ensues on a bridge, between the sprightly Robin Hood and the not-so-little, Little John, portrayed by Dylan Skime. (Photos by Correne Martin)

The Baroness’ persistent squeal and over-the-top character, played by Kama Tesar (center), was well matched by her fellow performers in Prairie du Chien High School’s “Robin Hood.” They include (from left) Sherwood foresters Jillian Kruempel and Erin Amdahl, as well as members of the “merry men,” Tristan Nesvold as Allan-a-Dale, Hailey Seitz as Meg, Ian Halderson as Will Scarlett and Sophie Miller as Beatrice.

The wise-cracking Marian, played by Katy Welsch (left), tantalizes the outlaws that Queen Eleanor, aka Ellie Mara, plans to “off with their heads.”

Derek Spiller was the perfect lead character in Robin Hood (center), surrounded here by his “merry men” (from left): Hailey Seitz as Meg, Dylan Skime as Little John, Ian Halderson as Will Scarlett and Carter Wittrig as Much the Miller. True to legend, the heart of Prairie du Chien’s version of “Robin Hood” is its story of taking from the rich to give to the poor.

Friar Tuck, played by middle schooler David Riniker, sits beneath a tree talking to himself and eating voraciously, before realizing he’s being spied upon by Robin Hood.

Distraught by the sheriff’s scheme to wed her, young Ellen, depicted by Alaina Lenz, converses with the inn keeper, played by middle school student Robert Groom.

“Robin Hood,” a humorous and action-packed play by Larry Blamire, was performed over the weekend in the Prairie du Chien High School Little Theater. The play tells the story of the grand adventure of Robin Hood, played by Derek Spiller (left) and his band of outlaws as they steal from the rich and give to the poor, while the audience simultaneously watches a romance bloom between the witty Robin and the skeptical and skilled Maid Marian, the lady-in-waiting to Queen Eleanor.
