It’s time to ‘Fight Back’ June 22-23

In its fourth year in 2018, Music Fights Back is more than just a little one-time fundraiser with some raffles and a few hundred people. It’s morphed into a two-day rock festival featuring nationally-acclaimed headliners. But, in the end, its intent is as sincere as ever. Music Fights Back remains a cause for kids battling cancer, an opportunity to raise money and purchase digital tablet and MP3 devices so some of the most innocent patients can watch movies, play games and listen to music during cancer treatments. 

This year’s festival will be the weekend of June 22 and 23 on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien. Music will start at 2 p.m. both days. Friday’s headliner is Wayland and Saturday’s is Saliva.

Local family prepares to host Crawford County Dairy Breakfast, set for June 2

The Flansburgh family knows the farming business quite well. Alan Flansburgh, his wife Kathy, and their five sons Devin, Derek, Dalton, Dustin and Dylan were educated from a young age on what hard work and ambition can create—a life worth living and a farm beautiful enough to show to the entire county. The family is working now to teach others about the wonders of the farm, as they prepare to host the Crawford County Dairy Breakfast on Saturday, June 2, from 6 to 10 a.m. 

In 1996, Alan and Kathy, already seven years into their marriage, bought the family farm from Alan’s parents. As the only son in his family and with a love for field work, Alan felt a responsibility to carry on the farm. With such a transaction, they became the third generation to cultivate the land they now call their home.

Two young men are valedictorian, salutatorian for PdC

Valedictorian Evan Boisvert and Salutatorian Jacob Mallat

The valedictorian and salutatorian for Prairie du Chien’s Class of 2018 are Evan Boisvert and Jacob Mallat, respectively. 

Evan is the son of Walter and Mary Boisvert, of Prairie du Chien. He plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison for biomedical engineering. 

Throughout high school, Evan has participated in National Honor Society, Key Club, Skills USA, Political Science Club and the graduation committee, some for all four years. He’s been a member of the golf team all four years, and was even awarded most improved player his junior year. He’s played basketball for three year as well.

Seneca Schools determines 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian

Valedictorian Emily Garfoot and Salutatorian Cody Ostrander

Seneca School District is proud to announce that Emily Sue Garfoot and Cody Ostrander have been declared the class of 2018’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. 

Emily Sue Garfoot, of Seneca, is the daughter of Scott and Susie Garfoot. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to study biology. 

During her high school career, she reveled in her time being involved in the National Honor Society, SHARE Youth Leadership, S-Club, FFA and Yearbook Staff. She also participated in volleyball, basketball, softball and forensics.

Prairie du Chien man charged with strangulation

A 38-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of strangulation and suffocation and one count of misdemeanor battery. 

Shaun Pitzer faces up to six years and nine months in prison and $20,000 in fines if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, Pitzer became angry and began pushing a woman at his residence. The woman slapped at Pitzer to stop him from pushing her around. Pitzer then put his hands on the woman’s neck and began choking her, the complaint said.

The new lobby will feature current trends in the lodging industry.

The AmericInn Lodge & Suites has been part of the downtown landscape for 20 years, but that is about to change. It will soon become the River District Hotel. 

Owner Paul Krienke explained the reason for the change, “We felt our affiliation with AmericInn limited our drive for excellence. We will now be free to put feet to big dreams and tell about them on our own website.”

“One of the nice things about traveling is so many different people will get different things out of it,” Adam Stout, Prairie du Chien Chinese teacher, said about the school district’s next China trip. Last year, 15 students and adults enjoyed the opportunity to see a different part of the world. Now, Stout is planning the next expedition, which will lead students through a whole new experience for a week in June 2019.

Jail inmate charged with two counts of battery to an officer of the court

A 29-year-old La Crosse man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with two counts of battery to an officer of the court. 

Bryant J. Swiggum faces up to a total of 12 years in prison and $20,000 in fines if convicted of both counts. 

According to the criminal complaint, Swiggum was an inmate in the Crawford County Jail and was acting up. When a jailer went to speak to Swiggum, Swiggum punched the jailer in the side of the head, the complaint said.

Man hit on head with handgun

A 70-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of substantial battery. 

Marlan McCune faces up to 3.5 years of imprisonment and a $10,000 fine if convicted. 

According to the criminal complaint, a Sheriff’s Department deputy responded to Crossing Rivers Health for a report of battery.

A man stated that McCune had gotten angry with him about going to work late the past couple of days. McCune got a handgun and pointed it at the man, the complaint said. McCune then hit the man on the forehead with the barrel of the handgun, according to the complaint.

The man then drove himself to Crossing Rivers Health and received eight stitches to close the wound.
