How can you help limit phosphorus pollution in water

Fertilizer on the farm and in your lawn, soil erosion, cleaning supplies and animal waste are all sources of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution of our water. In Prairie du Chien, the city water and wastewater departments are starting a seven- to nine-year case study of its phosphorus levels. While the city limits its own pollutants and treats the phosphorus discharged from the wastewater treatment plant, what can community members do to help keep the potential for problematic phosphorus levels to a minimum?

In short, you can:

•use fertilizer responsibly, 

•don’t over water gardens and yards,

Construction on Highway 27 project rolling right along

The State Highway 27 reconstruction project, from just north of Prairie du Chien through Eastman (April 3-Nov. 21), is about two months in already and seems to be on schedule. The contractor finished roadway grading from Cipra Lane to Irish Ridge Road just prior to Memorial Day, according to project manager Jeremy Krachey. Now it’s on to the next section of grading, which is Radloff Road to Limery Road/Wachuta Road. The current section will take approximately one month to complete. 

The Kraemer Company is placing select crushed subgrade improvement and base aggregate from Cipra Lane to Irish Ridge Road to complete the connection at Irish Ridge Road, Krachey said. They will continue to follow the grading contractor as they progress north to Limery Road/Wachuta Road.

Open intoxicants loophole in state law to be examined

With utility task vehicles (UTVs) and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) being a focus of discussion within the Grant County Board, it is important to keep in mind the ordinances of Crawford County and the laws of Wisconsin. 

According to the Department of Natural Resources' pamphlet on Wisconsin’s all-terrain and utility-terrain vehicle laws, “It is illegal to operate an ATV/UTV under the influence of alcohol or other drugs while on any property that is open to the public (generally this means trails, routes, lakes/rivers or corridors). Being under the influence is a condition in which a person’s ability to operate an ATV/UTV is impaired due to the consumption of drugs and/or alcoholic beverages to the extent that the person’s decision making ability is negatively affected as well as their balance and reaction time.”

Strong feelings regarding Amundson

A march in a show of support for the Bluff View student who was burned began Wednesday afternoon, May 30, near the high school grounds. A dozen people marched.

Amundson supporters have come out in force at his court appearance and at a recent school board meeting.

Signs such as this one have popped up in and around Prairie du Chien.

High speed chase leads to drug bust

On May 27, at 8:30 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department was notified by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department about a pursuit in progress involving a motorcycle traveling east on Highway 18 at a high rate of speed.

The motorcycle crossed into Crawford County. Prairie du Chien police officers attempted to conduct a maneuver to direct the motorcycle onto the Highway 18 Bypass and away from the city.

The motorcycle drove around the squad cars in excess of 100 mph and continued east on Iowa Street. Officers continued pursuit. After several minutes, the driver crashed in a drainage ditch on the east side of town.

Man arrested for stealing truck, OWI

On May 28 at 3:13 a.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a motor vehicle theft from 32319 County K, Lot #79, in the township of Prairie du Chien. 

The stolen vehicle was a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck. The owner of the pickup truck stated that a man attempted to gain entry into his trailer house at which time the man was told to leave. Minutes later, the owner of the pickup truck heard his vehicle start up and observed his pickup truck travelling northbound on County K. The owner of the stolen truck said the doors were unlocked and the keys were left inside.

Man injured in motorcycle crash

On Saturday, May 26 at 9:05 a.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a motorcycle crash on County Highway K, two miles north of Prairie du Chien.

Jesse Fowlkes, 28, Independence, Iowa, was driving a 2018 KTM motorcycle north on County K when he lost control. The motorcycle slid 150 feet down the road ejecting Fowlkes into the right ditch.  

Fowlkes was not wearing a helmet and suffered cuts to the head, arms and legs, along with bumps and bruises. He was treated at Crossing Rivers Health and released.

The motorcycle sustained moderate damage and was able to be driven.

Fowlkes was cited for not having a valid motorcycle license.

Assisting at the scene were Tri-State Ambulance, Bridgeport/Prairie du Chien First Responders and Bridgeport Fire Department.

Seniors have affordable, nutritious meal options in Crawford County

The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Eagle County serves people age 60 and older, as well as individuals ages 18-59 with disabilities, in Crawford, Juneau, Richland and Sauk counties. Its two main programs in Crawford County are the senior nutrition sites and home delivered meals. Though participation in both is good, the ADRC is trying to conceive different ideas that might encourage greater numbers. With May being Older Americans Month, this has been the department’s most recent focus. 

At the three meal sites in Prairie du Chien, Eastman and Soldiers Grove, Monday through Friday, seniors can enjoy a balanced lunch, companionship and being connected to additional services and resources they may need—all for a suggested donation of $3.50.

Wauzeka woman faces meth charge

A 35-year-old Wauzeka woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine, repeater. 

Daphne Bendall faces up to a $10,000 fine and 3.5 years of imprisonment if convicted. 

According to the criminal complaint, a search of Bendall’s bedroom revealed a box containing five syringes, two short, cut-off straws and three small plastic baggies containing meth residue. 

 

Bendall admitted to the investigator that the syringes and baggies were for the meth she has been using, according to the complaint.
