Mississippi River Adventure Day a fun learning experience

Mississippi River Adventure Day was a free educational program for students ages 5 to 15 from schools throughout Southwest Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa. The day of exploration provided children who live on both sides of Pool 10 with a fun, hands-on education about the ecosystem of the Mighty Mississippi River.

The event was held at and near Lawler Park in Prairie du Chien. 

Many students and their adult chaperones had a great time exploring the rich environment, resources and history of the river.

PdC school upgrade nearing completion


The new auditorium is beginning to take shape. Acoustic panels and lights have been installed. The seats will be installed on Aug. 20.

Upgrades to the Bluff View science lab are nearly complete.

The new band room is ready to go at Bluff View Intermediate School.

The Bluff View technical education room has noise reduction panels near the ceiling and a dust reduction system. The tables were constructed by students.

With the first day of school, Sept. 4, fast approaching, most of the estimated $19 million school facilities upgrade project in Prairie du Chien is wrapping up.

“The goal is to have the majority of work, especially interior work, completed by Sept. 1,” said Superintendent Robert Smudde.

“The news is never typical. It’s one of the things that keeps me pretty inspired,” Correne Martin, associate editor of the Courier Press, mentioned about the thrills of her career.

“Newspapers are one of the most important ways for people to find out about events, the local government and schools,” she said. “It plays a good role of informing them on what’s happening in their own backyard.”

She stated newspapers will be the way people will be able to learn about today, in the future. Without newspapers, history may be more challenging to access.

Both 96th Assembly primary candidates focused on rural life

Primary election voters in the 96th Assembly have a choice on the Democratic ticket. They may select between two candidates, Paul Buhr and Alicia Leinberger, in choosing who they wish to face Republican Loren Oldenburg in November. All candidates in the race for this seat are from Viroqua. 

The person elected will replace retiring legislator Lee Nerison (R-Westby). The 96th Assembly District includes Crawford County, Vernon County and part of Monroe County.

Two-car accident at end of Boscobel Bridge

On Tuesday, July 31, at 2:15 p.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a two-car crash on Highway 60 at Highway 61 at the end of the Boscobel Bridge.

LaVerne Wallace, 63, Prairie du Chien, pulled out from a stop sign in his 2013 Chevy Cruze in front of an eastbound 2012 Jeep Patriot driven by Howard Balch, 79, of rural Boscobel.

Balch and his passenger Shirley Balch, 77, sustained bumps and bruises, but did not require medical treatment.

Wallace sustained a left arm cut and did not require medical treatment.

Balch’s vehicle sustained front end damage and was towed. Wallace’s vehicle sustained left side damage and was towed.

Mount Hope man charged with drug and gun crimes

Dustin Caya, 34, Mount Hope, is charged with possessing 50 grams or more of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and being a felon in possession of firearms. The indictment alleges that on June 1, he possessed methamphetamine and a loaded .22 caliber rifle. The indictment also alleges that on June 1, he possessed 17 firearms that were loaded, including nine rifles, three shotguns, and five handguns.

Dillman Equipment fined $124k in accident that took Wauzeka man’s life


Dillman Equipment, a division of Astec, is located along County K just north of Prairie du Chien.

Dillman Equipment, a division of Astec in Prairie du Chien, has been fined nearly $125,000 in the Nov. 29, 2017, death of a Wauzeka man who died following an accident there his first day on the job. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited the company for multiple safety violations after a six-month investigation.  

According to the OSHA report, Curtis Groom, 26, was on his first day of the job at the asphalt mixing plant, working in an abrasive blasting room with another employee when the accident occurred. Together, they blasted a drum frame using an abrasive material known as coal slag.

Hospital claims Vineyard Road project caused problems at its property

Crawford County denies change in flow of water, Bridgeport township investigates before considering action

Crossing Rivers Health has provided a notice of claim and petition for relief to the Bridgeport Township and Crawford County government bodies and to Kramer Consulting Group, of Wauzeka. The hospital contends there was “unreasonable diversion of surface waters causing flooding, water trespass and damages to its property” as a result of “negligent planning, designing, engineering, construction, supervision and inspection” of an expansive Town Road Improvement Project (TRIP) for the reconstruction of Vineyard Road in summer of 2016.

Accident in town of Seneca causes injuries

On July 28, at 8:14 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a one-vehicle traffic crash with injuries on Stoney Point Road near Lovers Lane in the township of Seneca.

Courtney M. Pilger, 19, Onalaska, was operating a 2003 Pontiac Bonneville westbound on Stoney Point Road. While attempting to negotiate a curve, Pilger lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the embankment along the left side of the roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn. The Pilger vehicle came to rest on its top in the eastbound lane of the roadway. Pilger and her passenger, Halley M. Fritz, 20, Tomah, were able to exit the vehicle and call 911.
