Even greater place to swim this winter

Setting out to make the pool deck as safe as possible for patrons at Hoffman Hall, staff researched products that could provide a durable, anti-slip surface. In doing so, they learned that 3M in Prairie du Chien had products that would fit that bill. Collaborating with 3M staff, the perfect matting was chosen. Several rolls of vinyl Nomad were donated to Hoffman Hall, valued at $1,000 apiece, for placement along the outside edge of the pool and inside the men’s and women’s bathrooms. The Nomad is resistant to grease and oil that swimmers’ feet could otherwise leave on the deck, it helps protect the original 1962 floor surface and it covers up the old non-slip strips. The Nomad is also easy for the staff to clean. So far, patrons are loving it, according to pool staff, and only one roll has been used. The second roll will be added in other areas at Hoffman Hall and likely at the city’s outdoor pool as well.

Familiar owners take over Eastman Locker

The age of the Eastman Locker was not known by either owners, though there’s a neat picture of it inside the store from back in 1912 when it was a general store.

After 13 and a half years of ownership under Kevin and Jane Schaaf, the Eastman Locker was sold to Grant and Nikki Stluka, who took over Dec. 31.

“This is big news for a small town,” Jane noted. 

The deal closed through Adams Auction & Real Estate on New Year’s Eve, and as soon as 2019 started, the Stlukas were in the meat locker plant, ready for business as usual. The same employees will remain in Brian Cipra, Matt Lorenz, Tim Sprosty and Roy Kramer, and the hours, services and products are expected to be much the same.

So much love already for New Year’s baby

Cayden never made a sound or opened his eyes during his first official interview last week.

“Most people aren’t as blessed to come into the world with what he has,” the dad of the 2019 New Year’s baby in Prairie du Chien remarked quietly, looking at the tiny face of his two-day-old son, Cayden Allen. 

Cayden was born to Jordan Nance and Christopher Conant, of Prairie du Chien, just 23 minutes after midnight on Jan. 1, at Crossing Rivers Health. He is the couple’s first child together, but joins Conant’s older son, age 6, in their loving family. His middle name was chosen in memory of Cayden’s late grandfather, who passed away last May.

Highway 18 project in Grant County to begin in summer

Motorists on Highway 18 in the Prairie du Chien area are not done with construction zones just yet. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) is in the process of developing final plans to improve US 18, beginning just south of the Wisconsin River Bridge and continuing southeast to the US 18/WIS 35 intersection near Patch Grove. The project length is 6.3 miles.

Polodna a man of service above self

Stacy Polodna served the Prairie du Chien Police Department for the better part of two decades, working part-time in college, starting as a full-time patrolman in 1999, and becoming a detective in 2009. He passed away Dec. 22, 2018, at the age of 50. The most savage of all criminals—cancer—is what took his life. 

Polodna, who lived in rural Bagley, was diagnosed a mere two years ago with glioblastoma brain cancer and retired in 2017.

Over $5,000 made in Christmas bake sale for youth mission trip

The Eastman United Methodist Church Youth Group organized a Christmas bake sale throughout December to help offset the costs of a mission trip to Hopkinsville, Ky., June 22-29. 

Exactly $6,710 was raised by the kids who are going and their families, who reside in Eastman, Prairie du Chien and Wauzeka. Around $5,275 of that was profit. Ninety percent of the funds was made in pre-sales, while some was garnered at a stand set up at Johnson’s One Stop in Seneca Dec. 29.

“They sold an insane amount of baked goods,” said parent Cindy Payne.

Non-emergency lockdown happens at PdC High School

There was a non-emergency lockdown at Prairie du Chien High School on Friday, Dec. 21.

It was brought to the attention of the school principal via the Prairie du Chien Police Department that there were some “troubling statements” made on social media that involved a student at the school.

Principal Andy Banasik called for a non-emergency lockdown and the building was searched by administration and the police department. The entire building and interior and exterior were swept and deemed safe by school administrators and the police officers onsite. The lockdown was then lifted and students returned to the regular student schedule (which at this time was lunch).  Students then proceeded to an all school assembly.

Man arrested for threatening county employees

On Dec. 21, at 12:30 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department spoke with staff members at the Crawford County Administration Building in reference to an agitated man who made threats to staff there. According to staff members at the Administration Building, Brian Pettit, 29, Prairie du Chien, became upset about missing an appointment. When he was told of the issue and told he needed to make another appointment, he became verbally irate and left the building. Staff members of the Administration Building placed a call to Pettit to reschedule his appointment and he continued to be verbally abusive towards staff.

Staff warned Pettit that if his pattern continued, they would call the police. Pettit responded by claiming to have a gun and a hand grenade.

One airlifted after crash on Christmas

A Christmas morning head-on crash resulted in one young adult being airlifted to a larger hospital for treatment of her injuries, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. 

Just after 9 a.m., a two-vehicle crash was reported on Highway 18 south of County C in Bridgeport. Officers arrived on scene to find that Autumn Starrett, 19, of Prairie du Chien, had been driving east on Highway 18 in her 2000 Ford Taurus. She crossed the center line, striking a westbound 2017 Chevy Volt, driven by Alan Jentz, 55, of Beaver Dam. After colliding head-on, both vehicles came to a rest in the ditches on opposite sides of the highway.
