This is a series about the Crawford County Health Department and the array of services they provide.

In April 2013, in the wake of the active shooter event at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, what has become the known as the Hartford Consensus was convened to bring together leaders from law enforcement, the federal government and the medical community to improve survivability from manmade or natural mass casualty events.

In October 2015, The White House launched a national awareness campaign called Stop the Bleed®. The campaign serves as a call to action to encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

City Council hears presentation about improving St. Feriole Island

Olivia Breuer, who will be a senior pursuing a bachelor of design in architecture degree at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in the fall, gave a presentation about improving St. Feriole Island to the Prairie du Chien City Council Tuesday night.

Los Aztecas starts to renovate old Coaches

Owner Lorenzo Dominguez is hopeful construction of his Mexican restaurant site will be finished so Los Aztecas can open in about three months.

Two years ago this month, the owners of Los Aztecas Mexican Restaurant, of Dubuque, Iowa, announced they had purchased the former Coaches Restaurant in Prairie du Chien. The time has finally come for them to start renovating the eatery and surrounding property, with the intent to open a restaurant serving authentic Mexican cuisine, according to owner Lorenzo Dominguez. 

Work to strip the interior for a completely new look began the week of July 22, with excavation of a portion of the parking lot happening the next weekend. Last week, regionally-contracted companies continued removing concrete from the parking spaces north of the restaurant, where Dominguez said there will be an addition for a patio and bar.

Experiencing 19th Century photography

Pictured (from top to bottom) is Rambow, manager of the H.H. Bennett Studio Wisconsin Historic Site, and Jenna Loda-Eddy, also from the site, located in the Wisconsin Dells, preparing to strike a portrait of the participants.

Lastly, this is the group portrait (which turns out reversed) that came of the experience. If you look very closely on left side of this finished version, you can see the silhouette of a young boy who wanted to look like a “spirit” in the photo. So, after 5 seconds of standing for the shot, he was instructed to move quickly out of the frame. For more information about the historic site, visit hhbennettstudio.org. A group of Fridays at the Fort attendees enjoyed stepping back in time to experience the sights and smells of an 1875 tintype photography studio, on the grounds of the Ft. Crawford Museum in Prairie du Chien Aug. 2. 

They learned about 19th Century photography and witnessed the developing process, using the same wet plate photography method used by H.H. Bennett over 100 years ago. Ultimately, many of Friday’s viewers had a group portrait “struck” by David Rambow, with authentic historic lenses that captured the moment on a thin 4x6 sheet of metal.

The next free Fridays at the Fort will focus on fur trade animals, at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9.

Alma Walsh

Alma Walsh passed into God’s arms on July 20, 2019, at 101 years old. 

She was born on the family farm in Haney Valley to Jessie Spencer Schwert and Otto Schwert. 

Alma was born on Feb. 16, 1918. She had one brother, Kenneth Schwert. She attended Haney Valley Grade School, Seneca and Gays Mills High Schools. She graduated from Gays Mills in 1935, Fennimore Normal School in 1937, and La Crosse State University in 1965. She taught elementary school for 38 years in one-room rural schools in Crawford County, Cambridge, Johnson Creek, and lastly 23 years in Delafield. She married Leon Walsh in 1938 and they had three children.

Crossing Rivers Health welcomes PdC native as interim CEO

Appointment follows board vote to end current CEO’s tenure 

 

The Crossing Rivers Health Board of Directors announced Tuesday the appointment of Garith Steiner as Interim Chief Executive Officer, effective July 26. 

Katie Garrity, President of the Crossing Rivers Health Board of Directors said, “Garith is very familiar with this organization and is dedicated to the organization’s success, as well as the success of the communities we serve.”

To fill the CEO position, the board entered into a 12-month management services agreement with Gundersen Health System, exclusively for the CEO position.

City looking into possible purchase of Blackhawk Junction

First Crawford County Alzheimer’s Walk Oct. 5

Start the support at Culver’s Share night July 30

Oct. 5 will be Crawford County’s inaugural Alzheimer’s Walk. The event on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien starts with an 8 a.m. registration and 9 a.m. walk/run.

The hope is for the community to step forward to help raise awareness and start a foundation for continued dementia care services locally, said Heather Moore, dementia outreach specialist with the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin. All funds raised will stay within the county for services such as respite, care education consultations and other in-home supportive services.

Two crashes on Highway 18 Bridge

On July 22, at 3:27 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle crash on the Highway 18 Bridge in Prairie du Chien Township, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

Benjamin Prostine, 30, Soldiers Grove, was driving a 2010 Ford Transit Van east on Highway 18 and slowing due to traffic backed up on the highway. At the same time, a 2004 Chevy Impala, driven by Tenisha Eick, 24, of Prairie du Chien, was also eastbound behind Prostine’s vehicle. Eick rear-ended the Prostine vehicle. She was transported to Crossing Rivers Health by Tri-State EMS for treatment of her injuries. Prostine claimed no injuries from the crash.
