Settlement anticipated for hospital lawsuit

There is an anticipated settlement of the lawsuit filed by Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center against the town of Bridgeport, Crawford County and eight other defendants because of the mediation hearing on the matter on Sept. 6 in Madison.

Holy Family Parish marks 50 years of its fall bazaar

The 50th annual Holy Family Parish Fall Bazaar is Sunday, Sept. 15, at St. John’s Church in Prairie du Chien. 

Enjoy a charcoal broiled chicken dinner from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Also, homemade chicken noodle soup and chicken salad and ham sandwiches will be served from 4:30 to 6 p.m. 

During the bazaar, entertainment includes raffles, games and refreshments. The raffle drawing at the evening meal is highlighted with a grand prize of $1,000. There will be a country store with produce, crafts and baked goods, a basket raffle and money cage, parcel post and paddle wheel. This will be fun for the whole family, as many more games and activities will fill up the day.

Stark’s Sport Shop to host 75th anniversary event

In 1954, Richard Stark, service manager of Stark’s Sport Shop, examines the new 5.5 horsepower outboard that won the National Noise Abatement Council’s Certificate of Merit for quiet operation. The photo was taken at the Waukegan, Ill. Johnson Motors factory, where Dick was specially trained in outboard mechanics.

Pedestrian struck while walking along train tracks

A pedestrian walking along the railroad tracks in Prairie du Chien was struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train Wednesday evening, Sept. 4, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

At about 5:50 p.m., the police department was notified of the accident, which happened near the Parrish Street railroad crossing.

The victim, a 23-year-old Prairie du Chien resident, told officers he was walking along the tracks with headphones in and did not hear the train approaching him. As the train passed, the pedestrian’s right arm was struck, causing damage to his arm.

W-S announces new interim superintendent

The Wauzeka-Steuben School Board has announced its selection of an interim superintendent, David Alexander, who will assume duties from current interim, Gary Albrecht. Alexander's contract will be approved at the Sept. 16 board meeting. 

Alexander holds a Bachelor of Science in communications from UW-La Crosse, and a Master of Science in educational leadership from Cardinal Stritch University. Prior to his retirement in June of 2019, Alexander worked 24 years in the Yorkville (Wisconsin) School District, including 18 as superintendent. 

Alexander will work approximately 15 days during a transition period from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, and then assume all duties beginning Jan. 1, 2020.

Man attempts to elude deputy, arrested on marijuana violations

On Aug. 28, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit came across a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu operating at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 35 in the township of Eastman. As the deputy attempted to turn around to initiate a traffic stop, the Malibu attempted to elude the deputy. The Malibu turned down a steep driveway onto private property along the Mississippi River. The deputy was able to locate the vehicle and pursued the vehicle for several hundred yards along the river on a dirt road before the Malibu came to the end of the road and came to a stop.

The deputy detained the driver, identified as Alexander Berg, 27, West Union, Iowa, and his passenger, Benjamin Campbell, 34, West Union, Iowa. During the contact, Berg displayed indicators of alcohol and drug impairment. Berg was also discovered to be on parole through the State of Iowa.

Vehicle goes into ditch

On Sept. 1, at 6:47 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 61, south of Fry Lane, in the township of Scott. 

Fallon C. Sweeney, 22, Shoreview, Minn., was operating a 1998 Toyota Camry southbound on Highway 61 when her vehicle went into the gravel along the southbound lane. Sweeney attempted to bring her vehicle back onto the roadway but over-corrected, causing the vehicle to become sideways while in motion in the southbound lane. The Sweeney vehicle went off the west side of the roadway and into the ditch. 

Sweeney was able to safely exit the vehicle without injuries. She was wearing her seatbelt. The vehicle sustained moderate damage. Sweeney was cited for inattentive driving.
