Prairie Industries sells majority interest

Prairie Industries informed its workers on Sept. 23 and 24 that a few days earlier it had sold a majority share of both Prairie Industries and Nu-Pak, in Boscobel, to the Halifax Group.

The approximate 900 jobs are secure and operations are expected to remain the same at the three Prairie du Chien and one Lansing, Iowa, Prairie Industries plants, as well as at Nu-Pak. 

According to their website, “The Halifax Group is a private investment firm dedicated to partnering with founders and managers of lower middle-market businesses with total enterprise values generally between $50 million and $300 million.” The company has 100 years of combined experience and $1.5 billion under management.

The 2019 Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards Program brought about 150 business professionals together for an elegant night Oct. 2, on the Celebration Belle paddlewheel boat. A night cruise on the Mississippi River was enjoyed along with a buffet-style meal and beverages. Chamber President and CEO Bob Moses emceed the event and, along with chamber board president, Nick Coffield, presented the night’s awards.

PdC Correctional inmate lawsuit being screened for merit

A lawsuit filed by 10 inmates of Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution is still being screened to make sure there is merit to the suit, and that it is not frivolous, said a deputy clerk of the U.S. District Court, Western District of Wisconsin.

Kickapoo River expected to flood, Mississippi to get near flood stage

According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River at McGregor is predicted to reach 15.9 feet on Oct. 8 due to more rain in northern Wisconsin, Minnesota and throughout the region. The river was at 12.97 feet at 7:45 a.m. on Oct. 1. It was at 13.49 feet at 6:45 a.m. on Oct. 2. Minor flood stage is 16 feet. 

At 16 feet, the Washington Street Bridge to St. Feriole Island begins to flood and is closed. Pumping operations are underway.

Hundreds of dead and dying trees due to sustained high water

This is an example of heavy island bank erosion caused by high water in Pool 10.

Anglers, boaters and many other people who enjoy the Mississippi River have noticed a large die-off of trees and a lot of erosion on the islands of the river, especially evident this year.

Hundreds of trees have died in Pool 10 and perhaps thousands in the whole Upper Mississippi River.

Area man charged with growing, selling marijuana

A 56-year-old Soldiers Grove man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of the manufacture of marijuana (between 1,000 and 2,500 grams).

Larry Waters faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines if convicted. According to the criminal complaint, officers found a green house in the middle of an open ridge top field on Waters’ property in the town of Clayton.

Town of Freeman man arrested in drug bust

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department has been conducting an extensive investigation into the distribution and sale of illegal narcotics from the Kenneth Sandvick residence located in the township of Freeman. As a result of this investigation, the sheriff’s department applied for and was granted a search warrant. 

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department utilized the Tri-River Area Special Operations Team to execute a search of Sandvick’s residence on Sept. 25. The special operations team is constructed of Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and Prairie du Chien Police Department law enforcement staff. 

Items seized included methamphetamine, ecstasy, methamphetamine paraphernalia, a weighing device, packaging supplies, counterfeit currency, and firearms.

Local man accused of sexual assault

A 31-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of the sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age.

Christopher Thornton faces up to 40 years in prison and a $100,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Thornton had sex with a boy who was under the age of 16.

PdC council approves stop sign additions near elementary, high schools

Drivers: If you haven’t already noticed, the city of Prairie du Chien has permanently added some new stop signs in the areas of B.A. Kennedy Elementary School and Prairie du Chien High School. 

A total of four stop signs have been either placed or requested at three intersections to increase pedestrian safety at these schools: one at Michigan and Webster Streets, one at Michigan and Cass Streets (not yet placed) and two at Wells and Dousman Streets—one on the east side and a second on the west side.

Visit Prairie’s ancestors at cemetery tour Saturday

October is here, and that means it is time for the popular cemetery tour sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Historical Society. This year, while Visiting Our Ancestors, participants will tour four of Prairie du Chien’s historic cemeteries and meet members of the Brisbois, Rolette and Dousman families, and also several people who once lived at Fort Crawford.
