Man faces charges for heroin, meth possession

On Oct. 31, at about 2 p.m. the Prairie du Chien Police Department K-9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation on the 400 block of South Marquette Road. During the course of the stop, K-9 Rico was utilized and indicated to the presence of one or more controlled substances he is trained and certified to locate. A subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in heroin, methamphetamine, and other drug paraphernalia being confiscated, according to officials.

Through the course of the traffic stop, out of the seven occupants in the vehicle, officers determined the person who possessed the contraband was Benny C. Vann, 26, of La Crosse.

Always check candy and food with caution, not only on Halloween

The Prairie du Chien Police Department is reminding citizens to be cautious at all times with candy or food items, and not just after seeing Halloween-related social media posts about it. 

On Oct. 31, the police department took a report of a suspicious “crystal like” substance that was found at the bottom of a trick-or-treat bag. Officers recovered the item and tested it for all known illicit drugs. All tests were negative. Additional testing revealed the substance was most likely salt, similar to ice melt used for sidewalks/roads.

Man pinned but rescued from underneath vehicle

Prairie du Chien emergency responders and good samaritans pulled a man out from underneath the SUV that suddenly pinned him Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 30. 

At about 2 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department, Tri-State EMS and the Prairie du Chien Fire Department were dispatched to Lockwood Court in Prairie du Chien, where a man was trapped under a vehicle.

Upon arrival, it was determined that Ethan Koozer, 21, of Prairie du Chien, was working on his vehicle when the equipment used to hoist the vehicle in the air failed. The Chevy Trailblazer fell on top of Koozer, pinning him underneath, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Gov. Evers declares energy emergency

Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #56 last week declaring an energy emergency in the state of Wisconsin. 

Due to various unforeseen circumstances, including a late corn harvest and sudden cold snap, demand for propane has sharply increased across Wisconsin and the Midwest. 

This Executive Order will allow for the swift and efficient delivery of petroleum products throughout the state. 

“Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites depend on propane to heat their homes and right now farmers are depending on it to dry their corn,” Gov. Evers said. “Ensuring that we get propane to these folks is critical for the health, safety, welfare, and economic well-being of Wisconsinites across our state.”

Sign up starting for Operation Santa in Crawford County

Operation Santa for Crawford County residents will be offered again for the 2019 season, sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Rotary Club. 

Families in need should sign up between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 at Couleecap in Prairie du Chien or at the village office in Gays Mills. Distribution will be Friday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien.

Traffic stop yields meth related arrests

On Oct. 20, a Crawford County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a white 2000 Chevy Silverado in the city of Prairie du Chien for failing to stop for a stop sign. The deputy identified the driver as Kristian Tesar, 24, Prairie du Chien, and the front passenger as Raymond McCullick, 30, of Prairie du Chien.

Two women arrested for methamphetamine

On Oct. 27, a Crawford County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2005 Dodge Ram truck on Main St. in the village of Soldiers Grove. The deputy identified the driver as Kayla Kuykendall, 31, Viola, and the front passenger as Laura Schaller, 32, Soldiers Grove.

Woman has spirited flair for investigating the paranormal

On Halloween, Heather White will probably be watching some paranormal show on television. But she’ll be wishing she were out actually investigating and interacting with spirits herself. 

Originally from Arkansas and now living in Prairie du Chien, Heather began ghost hunting after watching them on TV. She and her ex-husband, who is from this area, thought the mysterious phenomenon was so intriguing that they “bought a digital voice recorder and headed to some cemeteries.”

Heather said her biggest motivation for getting into paranormal investigations was to satisfy her curious mind

How an Aussie ended up in PdC

There aren’t too many Australian citizens who pass through Prairie du Chien.

Last week, Cameron Collins, 50, came from the coastal city of Clifton Springs, Victoria, to America. 

“I know California and all the movies. I just wanted to get to know middle America and everyday life here,” Collins said.

He came to know about southwest Wisconsin because of his family connection with Jane Achenbach, from Eastman.
