Rose-Maar Dairy of Garnavillo will hold a dairy presentation and giveaway to the teachers, staff, and students of Clayton Ridge Elementary School in Garnavillo. The event is set to take place Friday, Dec. 4, and is part of Dairy Cares, through Midwest Dairy. "Also AMPI, the dairy cooperative we sell our milk to, will be giving away a free cheese stick to each person and a free pound of butter to each staff member," noted Anna Wilson, spokesperson for Rose-Maar Dairy.

Council awards contract, amends mask mandate

The Guttenberg city council meeting in special session on Nov. 23, awarded a contract for the riverbank retaining wall project in downtown Guttenberg and amended the face mask resolution approved earlier in the month.

On hand for the meeting were Mayor Bill Frommelt, councilmembers Virginia Saeugling, Jane Parker, Austin Greve, and Fred Schaub, and City Manager Denise Schneider.

Globally the COVID-19 pandemic has been very stressful and isolating for many individuals. In the past, family gatherings during the holiday season have offered an opportunity to reconnect with loved ones. Unfortunately this holiday season may need to be modified to reduce the spread of the virus in an effort to keep your friends, families, and communities healthy and safe. Ongoing concerns from healthcare professionals, hospitals filled to capacity, and a worsening epidemic have generated a need to scale down holiday plans.

School tests virtual learning plan

A two-day trial run of an online learning plan took place for all grade levels on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 23-24, at Clayton Ridge Community School. "Teachers, students and parents need to have this experience on a small scale before a possible shutdown," said Superintendent Shane Wahls. "We will gather feedback from parents, students and teachers in order to make the appropriate adjustments in the event that we would need to go fully online."

Janet Ann Moser passed into peace on Nov. 17, 2020, at the age of 89.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. Because of the current Corona Virus restrictions, there will be a private family service and interment.

Rita Kregel, 84, Monona, passed away on Saturday Nov. 14, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Fayette surrounded by family.

Private funeral services were at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, conducted by Rev. Chris Podhajsky.

Burial was at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Monona.

Kathleen Bockenstedt, 93, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2020, surrounded by family.

Due to COVID-19 concerns the family will be having a private family mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Alice E. Conant, 99, of Lamont died Friday morning, Nov. 20, 2020, at her home.

Private funeral services were held at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, conducted by Rev. Susan Friedrich.

Interment was at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, rural Oelwein.

Charles N. Nehl

On Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020, Charles “Charlie” Nicholas Nehl, husband, father, son, brother and uncle died in Cedar Rapids, suddenly from COVID-19 at the age of 38. 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private viewing will be held at Kramer Funeral home on Nov. 27 by invitation.

A private service for immediate family will be held on Nov. 28, conducted by Fr. Paul Baldwin.
