Gregg G. Frieden

Gregg Gene Frieden, 55, of Elkader passed away on Thursday Jan. 28, 2021, at his home after battling lung cancer. 

Per Gregg’s last wishes, there will be no services. He wants to be remembered as the fun loving, prankster outdoors man that he was.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Elkader assisted the family.

Steve Patzner of Guttenberg — also known as "Mountain Man" — has been hunting and fishing since he was a child. The outdoorsman began, "It's the end of an era – I sold my Hovercraft five or six years ago and just sold my airboat yesterday. That river is dead – it's too bad."

Business recruitment survey reveals top business prospects

Last November, the City of Guttenberg’s Community Vitality Team invited community members to provide input on what businesses and/or services they would like to see open or be made available in the community.  More than 300 people responded to the survey. 

The top responses for a business that respondents would be most likely to frequent were:

• A microbrewery featuring things like a variety of brews, a food menu, live music and events pairing beer and food

Michael S. Horn

Michael S. Horn, 53, of Guttenberg, formerly of Dubuque, completed his earthly journey suddenly on Jan. 16, 2021, after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

To honor Mike’s life, his celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Eagle’s Club, 1175 Century Drive in Dubuque.

The Tri-State Cremation Center is serving Mike’s family.

Dr. Barron's former practice renamed River Town Family Dentistry

In 1979, the late Dr. Donald Barron opened up a dental practice in Guttenberg. His son, Dr. John Barron, joined his practice one year later. "I started my career in dentistry 41 years ago," Dr. Barron commented. "My wife, Sandy, and I arrived in Guttenberg in July 1980, just in time to ride on RAGBRAI VII, which ended their ride in Guttenberg that year. My father and I were in practice together until his retirement. He had practiced over 50 years in dentistry."

Food & Fitness creates access to healthy lifestyles

Northeast Iowa Food & Fitness initiative is on a mission to create vibrant communities where the healthy choice is the easy choice. 

The program has brought people in Clayton, Allamakee, Chickasaw, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties together to make Northeast Iowa a place where people of all ages can have access to healthy, locally-grown foods, with abundant opportunities for physical activity where they live, learn, work and play.

County VNA begins phase 1B vaccinations

The Clayton County Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) announced on Jan. 26 that it had received 200 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for phase 1B, targeting those who qualify based on age. Individuals aged 65 or older are eligible for the vaccine at any time during phase 1B. "Please remember that vaccine allocations are limited. The Clayton County VNA will work directly with IDPH and our local healthcare providers to distribute the vaccine as quickly as possible," said a spokesperson.

Marvin Haller

Marvin Karl Haller was born at home during the depression on Jan. 17, 1934. Once his mother realized a mistake was made on his birth certificate it was changed to Marvin Dale and remained so until his death at home on Jan. 19, 2021. 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date on the Cedar River.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.
