Eunice and Merlin Barry of rural Colesburg grew up in close proximity to one another on family farms in rural Clayton County. Eunice, 88, is the daughter of Cecil and Myrtle Hansel, and has one sister, Janette. Merlin, 91, is the son of Frank and Edith Barry and had one brother, Frank Jr. The couple has been married for 67 years.

Police Chief George Morteo is retiring after 29 years of dedicated service with the Guttenberg Police Department. A retirement celebration will be held in honor of Chief Morteo and welcoming in of newly-hired Chief Derek Chambers on Friday, July 23, from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Guttenberg Municipal Building dining room.

Lengthy meeting for city council

The Guttenberg city council, in a meeting that lasted nearly three hours, covered a varied agenda at its regular meeting on July 12.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led the council through the evening's agenda. On hand for the meeting were council members Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker, City Manager Denise Schneider and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Jim Osterhaus, long-serving dentist and community volunteer, has officially hung up his drill and retired. "I practiced dentistry full-time for 31 years and part-time the last few years," he said.

Guttenberg addresses "nuisance” properties

Being a property owner comes with both rights and responsibilities. When one person's use of their property interferes with their neighbors' enjoyment, health or safety, nuisance laws can be called into effect to deal with problems.

In legal terms, a nuisance is an activity or physical condition that results in annoyance, inconvenience, discomfort, or injury to another person or to the public.

Linda K. (Dohse) Caspersen, 68, of Garnavillo passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 25, 2021.

Funeral services were Monday, July 5, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Hillary Burns-Kite. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Interment was at Clayton Cemetery, Clayton.

Retired Clayton Ridge School physical education teacher Ricky Jensen, of Guttenberg, recently rode his bicycle on Route 66 for 2,400 miles from Santa Monica, Calif., to Chicago in 34 days.
