KWWL weather observer keeps community informed

Rod McLane, KWWL weather observer and longtime resident of Guttenberg, has always had a soft spot in his generous heart for his community. He was born in 1964 and is a graduate of St. Mary Immaculate Conception and Clayton Ridge School in Guttenberg. He has been employed in the area for most of his life, working at Ever's Jack and Jill, the Guttenberg Municipal Swimming Pool, Ertl's in Dyersville and at the Stadium Bar and Grill, which he eventually owned and operated for 11½ years.

2020 census data shows 6% decline in Clayton County

Clayton County saw a 6% decrease in population between 2010 and 2020, according to data recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau. 

Clayton County's population stood at 17,043 in 2020, compared to 18,129 ten years ago. That figure reflects a national trend of shrinking population in rural areas.

Jane Siebrecht, 72, of Altoona, formerly of Garnavillo, died Aug. 19, 2021, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. prior to the service. Interment at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines, will follow.

Pamela Jean Voshell, 74, of Guttenberg, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2021, at Edgewood Convalescent Home.

Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 20, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Penny Hansel. Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Inurnment was at the Guttenberg City Cemetery.

Verdus Joseph Kann, 85, of Mankato, Minn., passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 12, 2021.

Visitation will be Saturday, Aug. 28, from 10-11 a.m. at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Boyd Evan Rodamaker, 95, of Elkader passed away on Aug. 4, 2021, at Mercy-One in Elkader.

Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 28 at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 28 at Garnavillo Community Center.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Service and Crematory of Elkader assisted the family.

Gayle Kahle

Gayle Kahle, 98, of Guttenberg, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021, at River Living Center in Guttenberg with family at her side.

Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 21, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Michael Ashman. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Guttenberg City Cemetery.

Community members recall "Field of Dreams"

In 1989, Field of Dreams, an American sports fantasy drama film written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson, adapted from W. P. Kinsella's 1982 novel Shoeless Joe, was filmed locally in northeast Iowa. The wildly–popular, feel-good movie starred Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster in his final film role. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

Students and teachers in the Clayton Ridge School District returned to class on Monday, Aug. 23. The school district has recently hired six new energetic teachers to add to their dedicated faculty. Three of the new recruits grew up in Guttenberg and graduated from Clayton Ridge, and three were born and raised in northeast Iowa.

Welcome planned for New Jersey visitors

A meet and greet event for city officials from Guttenberg, N.J., will be held this Friday, Aug. 27, from 6-10 p.m. at Lakeside Ballroom in Guttenberg. Admission is free, and the band — Triple Threat — is a community favorite for all to enjoy dancing. Everyone is invited, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.
