Mary L. Krapfl

Mary Lou Krapfl, 92, of New Vienna passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, at her home surrounded with love.

Visitation was Friday, Oct. 1, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville and again prior to services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 2, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna, conducted by Rev. Dennis Quint.

Five candidates will vie for three Guttenberg city council seats in the upcoming election on Tuesday, Nov. 2. Incumbent Virginia Saeugling is the only council member seeking re-election. Each elected council member will serve a four-year term.

Absentee voting for upcoming election

Clayton County voters interested in voting absentee for the Nov. 2nd city/school election may file request forms with the Clayton County Auditor’s Office. 

The new legislation has shortened the number of days that the Auditor’s Office may have ballots available for absentee voting. Voters now have 20 days to vote absentee either by mail or in-person rather than 29 days.

Judy M. Puls

Judy Margaret Puls, 66, went home to be with the Lord on September 23, 2021.  She died unexpectedly in a tragic accident.

She was born April 20, 1955, to James and Joyce Puls in Pender, Neb. Judy graduated from Des Moines Lincoln High School and the University of Northern Iowa. 

Judy had a long and distinguished career as an educator at Ft. Madison, Garnavillo, Guttenberg and Clayton Ridge schools.

Research biologist Dr. William Norris, Professor of Biology at Western New Mexico University in Silver City N.M., has spent the last 26 years conducting a research project at Mossy Glen State Preserve, an 80-acre paradise located six miles northwest of Edgewood in Clayton County.

Fatal school bus accident in Guttenberg

A Guttenberg woman died at the scene after being hit by a school bus on Thursday morning, Sept. 23, near St. Mary's School in Guttenberg.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, Judy Puls, 66, was crossing the street at approximately 7:50 a.m. when she was struck by a school bus driven by Ronnie Moser, 73. The bus was turning south from Herder Street onto South Second Street. Students from St. Mary's and Clayton Ridge school district were on the bus at the time.

Leonard A. “Lennie” Thein

Leonard A. “Lennie” Thein, 86, of Garnavillo, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, in his home.

Lennie was born June 2, 1935, in Garnavillo, the son of Arthur and Irene (Tuecke) Thein. He was a graduate of Garnavillo High School. From 1958-1961 he served as a Specialist in the United States Army Corps, with some time spent in Korea.

Myrna L. Ohl

Myrna L. Ohl, 94, of Oelwein, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 15, 2021, at Grandview Health Care Center in Oelwein, where she had resided the past three weeks.

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein and for one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 20, at Christ United Presbyterian Church in Oelwein, conducted by Rev. John Kerr.

Parkinson's Awareness of Clayton County (PACC) is making plans to hold its 5th annual Parkinson's Awareness Walk and 9-hole best-shot golf outing. The event is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Guttenberg Golf & Country Club located at 28126 Hwy. 52. 

Registration for the walk begins at 9:30 a.m., with walkers lining up at 10 a.m. There is no cost associated with the walk, but a free will donation is appreciated.
