City council okays bathhouse change

At a special meeting on Friday, Oct. 26, the Guttenberg city council approved a design change for the bathhouse of the new swimming pool currently under construction.

The revision will provide a family changing room for the facility, not part of the original design. In September, a resident requested that the bathhouse include a room that can be used by patrons of either gender who have caregivers.

Polling sites will open at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m.

Body of missing boater located in Mississippi River near Cassville

On Thursday, Oct. 18, a 911 caller advised law enforcement officials that he had located a body in the Mississippi River.

The body was recovered from Sand Cut, just west of Jack Oak Road on the Wisconsin side of the river. The body was transported to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny for an autopsy. 

The autopsy confirmed the body was that of John Roe, 56, of Burlington, Wis. The cause of death was determined to be drowning and manner classified as accidental.

Fern C. Scheffert

Fern Clara Scheffert, 91, of Garber, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Services were private. Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Fern was born on July 29, 1927, on the family farm on Bear Creek in Elk Township, the daughter of Orlando and Clara Krieg.

Vernon G. Bockenstedt, age 75, of Colesburg, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville.

Visitation was Saturday, Oct. 27, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Interment was at Bethel Cemetery, Osterdock.

Visitation and celebration of life was Saturday, Oct. 27, at the United Methodist Church in Colesburg.

Burial was at the Brown Cemetery in Colesburg.

Nancy A. (Hayward) Metz, 76, of Milwaukee, Wis., formerly of Guttenberg, passed away unexpectedly due to a heart virus on Oct. 21, 2018.

A celebration of Nancy’s life and service of remembrance was Thursday, Oct. 25.

Homecoming weekend at Luther College in Decorah will be a memorable one for Guttenberg resident Dr. Russell Loven, who will receive the Luther Distinguished Service Award at an awards dinner that kicks off weekend festivities on the campus.

The award will be presented Friday evening, Oct. 26,  by Luther President Paula Carlson in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union, on the Luther campus.
