Kopecky's legendary lighted Christmas display

Each Christmas season the house of Norman and Joyce Kopecky, located at 919 North Second Street in Guttenberg, transforms into an array of magical Christmas delight. 

Kopecky has been decorating his home for the Christmas holidays for approximately 50 years.

Verdus L. Patzner

Verdus L. Patzner, 92, of Dubuque died Monday, Dec. 24, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center. 

Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 2, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Dubuque, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial, conducted by Rev. Steve Rosonke.

Entombment was at Mt. Calvary Mausoleum.

Harland G. Grunder Jr.

Harland G. Grunder Jr., 77, of Clayton, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

A celebration of life was held Friday, Dec. 27, at the Garnavillo Community Center.

Harland was born on Aug. 16, 1941, in Muscatine, the son of Harland Sr. and Anita (Hartman) Grunder.

Herbert Simons

Herbert Simons, 81, of Colesburg, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg. 

Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Interment was at Brown Cemetery, Colesburg.

Swimming pool progress update

A recent visit to the construction site and a meeting with Portzen Construction Superintendent Brian Vize provided an update on the project.

Visiting with McLane at her kitchen table, surrounded by sparkling holiday cheer, she emotionally described her beloved experience as St. Mary's choir director.

History tells us that Christmas trees came into general popularity in Europe many centuries ago, when Christians adapted the pagan custom of decorating winter festivals with evergreens. It is speculated that Martin Luther was the first person to bring a tree into the house as part of  Christmas observances. In the 1800s, trees were mainly decorated with edible decorations.

Council okays library position, acts on food truck ordinance

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on  Monday, Dec. 10, approved a full-time director's position for the library, moved forward on the mobile food vendor ordinance, and took the first step in an ordinance that would address unsightly properties.

Wilma J. Troester

Wilma J. Troester, 84, of River Falls, Wis. and formerly of Prairie du Chien, Wis. and Garnavillo, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, at the Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse, Wis.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the Garrity Funeral Home, Prairie du Chien. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, conducted by Pastor Bruce Hanson.
