Guttenberg flood preparedness

Unusual weather events that have created an inordinate amount of rain and snowfall in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa placed Guttenberg at risk for an increase in flooding along the banks of the Mississippi River and its tributaries.  

Stephan Bahls, wastewater and flood control superintendent for the City of Guttenberg, met with The Press to discuss how the city prepares for the spring flood season.

St. Mary alumnus Arnold Spielbauer donates scale-model canoe

St. Mary's class of 1946 alumnus Arnold Spielbauer, who resides in Liberty, Ill., has been building full and small-scale canoes since 1972. His 46 years of experience has made him somewhat of an expert in his field.

Spielbauer  utilized his time and talent to create a 1/5-scale replica of a decorated ancient woods watercraft. He donated the work of art to the St. Mary's Heritage Room located in the former convent north of the school.

Marvin "Marv" L. Pedretti

Marvin "Marv" Levi Pedretti, 88, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Friday, April 5, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Joseph “Joe” Helle Jr.

Joseph “Joe” Helle Jr., 74, of Cedar Rapids, died surrounded by his children, on Sunday, March 31, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Private services were held at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids.

Joe was born to Joseph Sr. and Ardella (Riesberg) on Dec. 6, 1944, in Dyersville.

Our "sister city," Guttenberg, N.J., is a small rectangle in Hudson County. The community, also named after Johann Gutenberg, is four blocks wide and 10 blocks in length covering approximately 150 acres of land with a steep terrain. 

The community has a population of approximately 11,700. It has been described as a place so tiny that every person, big or small,  is confined to a studio-sized apartment. It is the most crowded municipality in the United States.

Clayton Ridge women's prep golf notable Courtney Olson, daughter of Janet and Jeff "Ole" Olson of Guttenberg, has signed a letter of intent to continue her golf career at the University of Dubuque. The event took place at the Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on March 26.  Olson, a senior at Clayton Ridge, plans to major in business while attending the university.

Esther E. Goering

Esther Elizabeth Goering, 92, of Cedar Falls, died March 9, 2019.

There will be no visitation or services. Esther requested that her body be cremated and no memorial be established.

She was born in Edgewood, daughter of Elizabeth (Hoyer) and Walter Jewell. She married Wayne Goering Nov. 29, 1949. He died July 23, 1991.

Parker's Oskaloosa team wins title

A Guttenberg High School alumnus and Oskaloosa High School head basketball coach and athletic director reached the top this year. 

Ryan Parker and his high school team won the Iowa High School Division 3A basketball championship on March 8 in Des Moines before a crowd of 12,000 cheering fans at the Wells Fargo Arena.
