City council sets utility rates, solar energy policy

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on April 8 increased utility rates, responded to discussion on solar energy and set a public hearing on a budget amendment.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led councilmembers Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, and Virginia Saeugling through the evening's agenda. Also present at the council table were City Manager Denise Schneider and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Thomas C. Worrall

Thomas "Scooter" Cornell Worrall, 47, passed away suddenly March 28, 2019, in Mesa, Ariz.

He was born in Brush, Calif., on March 6, 1972. Thomas worked in the construction field, starting as a laborer and worked his way up to a superintendent for Ames Construction in Colorado. Tom enjoyed life, when he was not working he enjoyed spending time with his daughter Tabatha and riding his Harley-Davidson. Tom had many friends he considered his brothers and sisters.

Rosella M. Dugan

Rosella Maye (Averill) Dugan, 82, Guttenberg, passed away April 4, 2019, at 6:57 a.m. at the Guttenberg Care Center.

A celebration of her life will be held April 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Elkport-Garber Community Center where there will be a potluck picnic with internment after the celebration at Hansel Cemetery, Garber.

Wayne A. Amann

Wayne Arthur Amann, 82, of Hesperia, Mich., formerly of Garnavillo, died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, from complications of pneumonia.

A celebration of life was held Saturday, April 13, in White Cloud, Mich.

Wayne was born May 12, 1936, to Arthur and Margaret Amann. He attended and graduated from Garnavillo High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Air Force.

Unusual weather events that have created an inordinate amount of rain and snowfall in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa placed Guttenberg at risk for an increase in flooding along the banks of the Mississippi River and its tributaries.  

Stephan Bahls, wastewater and flood control superintendent for the City of Guttenberg, met with The Press to discuss how the city prepares for the spring flood season.

St. Mary alumnus Arnold Spielbauer donates scale-model canoe

St. Mary's class of 1946 alumnus Arnold Spielbauer, who resides in Liberty, Ill., has been building full and small-scale canoes since 1972. His 46 years of experience has made him somewhat of an expert in his field.

Spielbauer  utilized his time and talent to create a 1/5-scale replica of a decorated ancient woods watercraft. He donated the work of art to the St. Mary's Heritage Room located in the former convent north of the school.

Marvin "Marv" L. Pedretti

Marvin "Marv" Levi Pedretti, 88, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Friday, April 5, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.
