Small town businesses are the cornerstone of a successful community. Esser's Clothing Store, located at  502 S. River Park Drive in Guttenberg, has been in the clothing business for the past 73 years. Proprietor Matt Esser purchased the business from his father in 1969.

Exchange student shares Clayton Ridge experience

Becoming a foreign exchange student is the perfect way to travel the world, meet new people, learn a new language and experience a different culture. 

Clayton Ridge High School exchange student Ella Vihanto of Sotkamo, Finland, is embracing all of the above during her yearlong hiatus from her educational studies in Finland.

Council hears update on Schiller Street corridor

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on Feb. 19 heard a engineer's update on the Schiller Street Corridor project and looked at a proposal to hire an community/economic development director.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led council members Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub, Austin Greve and Mick Pierce through the evening's agenda. Also at the council table were City Manager Denise Schneider and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Patricia A. Schlueter

Patricia Ann Schlueter, 76 passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at the Stonehill Care Center following a long battle with cancer.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 13, from 4-8 p.m. at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Michaele Matt, 62, of Randolph, Wis., formerly of Garnavillo, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2020, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, Wis.

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Inurnment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Longtime respected businessman Tom Kuempel was born on Feb. 4, 1939, to Jack and Hildegarde (Lake) Kuempel. 

"I grew up and out in Guttenberg," the 81-year-old jokingly replied.

Farm Bureau Insurance has been serving Iowa Farmers for the past 81 years. The insurance company was founded in Des Moines in 1939 when the state Farm Bureau created the Iowa Farm Mutual Insurance Company in an effort to meet the unique liability needs of Iowa farmers.

Iowa 2020 caucus results

Clayton County residents joined others across the state on Monday, Feb. 3, as they met at caucus sites to support their favorite candidates for the upcoming presidential election in November.

Voters from approximately 1,700 Iowa precincts selected delegates to their respective county conventions. The 99 county conventions will then choose delegates for state party conventions, that will in turn designate delegates who will head to national conventions later this year.

Helen Ora Kann, 92, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, at Guttenberg Care Center.

Funeral services were at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Hillary Burns-Kite. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Kann Cemetery.
