Groundbreaking for School Upgrade Project

James R. Atkinson

James R. Atkinson, 95 of Prairie du Chien, and Mesa, Ariz., passed away at home on  April 18, as a result of congestive heart failure. 

 

Jim was born on Feb. 16, 1922, to John and Myrtle Atkinson in Crawford County, Wisconsin, one of six children.

Drugs reportedly in driver’s system at time of fatal crash

A Wisconsin state toxicology lab report indicated the presence of THC and cocaine in Brandon Ballweg’s system the evening he crashed his vehicle in Madison, resulting in the deaths of Kirk U’Ren and Jenni Steiner, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court. Wisconsin State Patrol speed estimates also determined Ballweg’s speed range at the time of the crash was between 87 and 92 mph.

Southwest Tech and Workforce Connections open facility as one

The April 11 ribbon cutting and open house at 1304 S. Marquette Rd., made the new facility official for Southwest Tech and Workforce Connections. The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and the Prairie du Chien School District congratulated both entities. Southwest Tech and Workforce Connections have both held offices in Prairie du Chien for a number of years. On April 11, they made their presence more prominent in the community by holding a ribbon cutting and open house at a new facility at 1304 S. Marquette Rd. Together, the two will continue to connect people, training and employment, while advancing self-sufficiency for area citizens.

The reason for the more visible location is because both entities had outgrown their former spaces near one another in the Crawford County Administration Building.

“About a year ago, we made the decision to leave. Because of the awesome partnership we have, we asked the technical college to go with us,” stated Teresa Pierce, Workforce Connections executive director. “We provide services in nine counties. The college provides the training part of it and we provide the employment part.”

hosts Prairie Relays

The Prairie du Chien track and field team hosted their first invitational of the year, the Prairie Relays, on Monday afternoon. Of the 14 teams competing, the boys placed seventh and the girls finished in ninth place. The following athletes placed:

1st: Evan Teynor (300 Hurdles; Personal Record at 42.34)

Street department workers help get family out of burning house
