Traffic stop leads to drug and theft arrest

On April 19, Prairie du Chien police officers saw in the city of Prairie du Chien a 1999 Mercury Sable being operated by Alicia Jones, 35, Bagley, and her passenger Christopher Kivi, 41, Bagley. The officers lost sight of the vehicle and later located it in the parking lot of Piggly Wiggly located in the township of Bridgeport.

The officers saw the vehicle drive around to the side of the business and park. The occupants attempted to walk away from the vehicle as the officers approached. The officers made contact for an equipment violation and requested the assistance of the Crawford County K-9 Unit. K-9 Breck was utilized for an open free air sniff of the vehicle and subsequently alerted to the presence of one or more controlled substances he is trained to detect.

Seizure leads to meth bust

On April 20, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call from a Julia Lloyd, 33, Stoddard. Lloyd reported that her passenger, Rashidat Momoh, 26, Little Canada, Minn., was having a seizure in her vehicle. Lloyd stated she had pulled into the parking lot at the Pronto Gas Station in De Soto. The De Soto First Responders, Tri-State Ambulance, and Vernon and Crawford County deputies responded to the scene.

Information obtained during an interview with Lloyd led deputies to request the Crawford County K-9 unit. Once on scene, K-9 Breck conducted an open free air sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of one or more controlled substance within the vehicle.

Art show to raise funds for mission trip by selling locally-handmade pieces

Nine members of the Eastman United Methodist Church Youth Group are taking a mission trip to southern Missouri this summer. To raise money for the annual, industrious and enlightening occasion, an art show fundraiser is planned for Sunday, April 30, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Gatherings on the Ridge in rural Eastman.

Artists’ donated work will be on display and for sale via silent auction for minimum bids of $30 apiece. Some of the local talents creating the pieces for sale include Sharon Dearborn, Gayle Patraw, Lisa Rogers, Lisa Miller, Cody Sime, Hans Glick, Nancy Dowling, Nate Bremmer, Tracy Morovits-Feye, Krystal Forde and others­—about 20 artists in total. The array of art will feature framed and canvas paintings, a quilt, small furniture, photography, greeting cards, batik pieces and kids’ art.

No changes to long-term water 

level plans, says Corps of Engineers

The Mississippi River continues to rise. On Monday, April 24, at 11 a.m., the river stage at McGregor was 13.81 feet. According to the National Weather Service Office in La Crosse, it is expected to reach 14.8 feet on April 28. Flood stage is 16 feet.

Groundbreaking for School Upgrade Project
