Deer, speed and bad brakes are factors in one-vehicle accident

On Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 10:18 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on North Halls Branch Road near County S and North Main Street in the township of Seneca.

Levin S. Lemere, 21, Coon Valley, was operating a 1992 Ford F-250 southbound on North Halls Branch Road. Lemere was attempting to negotiate a curve when two deer crossed the road. Lemere attempted to brake and went off the right shoulder of the roadway. Due to Lemere’s vehicle not having full functioning brakes he was unable to stop and continued into the grass for 60 yards before striking a tree head-on. Factors resulting in the cause of the crash were found to be speed and the lack of adequate brakes.

Lemere was cited for no insurance, no registration, operating after suspension and failure to have proper brakes.

Lemere suffered minor injuries in the crash. The vehicle was totaled.

Coaches sold, to become Los Aztecas

Thursday, Aug. 31, was a monumental day for the Prairie du Chien business community, as the sale officially closed for Coaches Family Restaurant. The Dave and Joanie Skemp family ran the successful restaurant for 47 years, starting as a rootbeer stand in 1970. The family sold to Los Aztecas, also a family-run business that has two Mexican restaurants in Dubuque, Iowa, and one in Galena, Ill. Opening of the remodeled restaurant is expected some time in October.

Kramer Real Estate, of Prairie du Chien, and realtor Sara Boxrucker receive the credit for working with John Herrig Realty, of Dubuque, Iowa, in completing the transaction. The 4,300-square-foot building was listed on Kramer’s website for $495,000. The sale price has not been disclosed.

Though it was a good feeling to have sold Coaches Restaurant, Dave and Joanie Skemp said it was bittersweet.

“It’s kind of sad, but it’s a happy moment, too,” Joanie shared.

The Prairie du Chien Girls had another amazing night on Tuesday. They placed second in an incredibly strong field of 21 teams at the Westby Cross Country Invitational.  

Wisconsin Dells, the first-ranked team in the state, took first with 31 points. Prairie du Chien edged out Westby, another state ranked team, with 75 points to their 81.

Girls Win At Darlington

The Prairie du Chien girls varsity cross country team won the Darlington Invitational against 25 teams on Saturday for the first time in the 34-year race history.  

The girls scored 76 points to top second-place Darlington’s 88 points. Darlington, 2016 Division 3 State Champion, was definitely favored to win on their own home course.

The Blackhawk girls golf team notched their first win of the season with a 214-228 victory over Lancaster on Thursday at Prairie du Chien Country Club. 

Gabby Ritchie paced the squad and was match medalist with her season low of 43. In second place overall was Mackenzie Maguire with a 47. Sophie Miller fired a 60. Molly Peterson posted a 64 and Lydia Seeley carded an 80.

A Prairie du Chien woman is helping out in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey with more than just donations. Kathleen Kalina is helping to get her friend, Jo Arispe, to Prairie du Chien from Rockport, Texas and is also aiding in finding Arispe a place to live at Rivercrest Villages, an apartment complex.

David M. Kramer

David M. Kramer, 42, of Prairie du Chien, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 4, at his home. 

 

He was born July 10, 1975, in Anaheim, Calif., the son of Duane and Janet (Gibson) Kramer. David was employed by Bennett Hardwoods in Prairie du Chien. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and loved to fish. David was a devoted father, loving son and brother.

The PdC girls edged out DodgePoint to win the meet 26 to 29.

Chinese musical group to have 

residency and perform in Prairie du Chien

A group of musicians from China will be the first of four cultural programs sponsored by Arts Midwest World Fest that will perform in Prairie du Chien over the next two school years.
