Eileen A. Ruff, 86, of McGregor, died Monday, Oct. 16, at her home in McGregor, in the care of her family. 

 

Eileen Agnes was born on April 7, 1931, to Lester and Ronilla (Schoulte) Connor in Elkader. She attended Country School, St. Joseph Catholic School, Elkader High School, and graduated from Monona High School in 1948.

Alexis S. Rooney

Alexis S. Rooney, 22, of Steuben, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 17. 

 

She was born Sept. 12, 1995, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Timothy and Pamela (Frazier) Rooney. Alexis was currently working as an assisted living caregiver.

Uncovered decks to be allowed in city residents’ front yards

Consideration was given by the Prairie du Chien Common Council to allow uncovered decks in front yards of residential zoning districts. Based upon the city’s plan commission recommendation, the council acted Tuesday night, Oct. 17, and decided to move forward with permitting residents to have uncovered decks in their front yards, as long as they meet the front yard setback (15 feet) requirement.

While this is now acceptable in the city, residents should not have such decks projecting into the setback. They are allowed up to three feet from the side and rear property lines, except in corner lot sideyards where they can be no closer than 15 feet from the property line.

Biking for a cause, men stay in PdC along journey to New Orleans

A small group of bicycling business executives are at the beginning of a journey that will challenge their physical and mental limits, with a goal to raise awareness and $200,000 to detect and treat cancer in underdeveloped countries.

At the ages of 50-plus, five Columbus, Ohio, men started a 1,600-mile, 17-day trip from Minneapolis, Sunday, Oct. 15, through eight states to New Orleans. They stayed overnight at the Country Inn & Suites in Prairie du Chien Tuesday. Wednesday, they set out for their next stop in Dubuque.

Ground broken for library expansion in Prairie du Chien

Here is a rendering model depicting how the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library will appear upon completion, which currently, is slated for late July 2018.

Ground was ceremoniously broken Monday morning at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library. A crowd of about 50 gathered to celebrate the long-awaited moment.

“I started in 2001,” Library Director Nancy Ashmore said. “Lois Gilberts was here for five years before me and she said this project was in the works then. I’m so happy we’re finally making this happen. I’m so proud of Prairie du Chien for taking this step.”

The $3.578 million library renovation and expansion became an official commitment for the city, upon approved resolution, in 2014. In 2015, financing, capital campaign and architectural plans were announced to the public.

Bids were expected to be let for the project in late 2016, as the Courier Press reported; however, an issue with the artesian well in front of the library arose. The 1860 well was leaking at an unknown location and needed to be capped prior to any construction.

Won’t you brave the halls?

The first weekend for the annual Halls of Terror in Prairie du Chien was not a wash, despite the downpour of rain making for a soggy couple of nights. Some 278 people went through Prairie du Chien’s haunted house, at the cedar building on St. Feriole Island, and according to Scream Xtreme’s Nick and Nate Gilberts, all reviews were positive.

To keep thrill seekers out of the rain, a large tent standing outside the facility was put to good use for the first time, possibly ever. It will remain on site throughout the rest of the Halls of Terror season. However, a few adjustments to the haunted house entryway have been made since this past weekend’s weather soaked the grounds.

Event-goers can still brave the halls Oct. 20-21 and 27-28 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. both nights. A kid-friendly, lights-on haunt will be Saturday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 6 p.m., at a reduced admission cost. On Halloween night, hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team began Regional Tournament action Tuesday hosting the Salam School Stars from Milwaukee.

The Hawks scored early, 6:22 into the game. Clayton DuCharme arched a pass in front of the goal where Ben Teynor timed his jump perfectly and headed the ball in.

Income, living cost statistics given at county board meeting

The executive director of Couleecap, Hetti Brown, gave a presentation at the Crawford County Board meeting Tuesday morning in Prairie du Chien. 

Brown told board members that Couleecap serves more than 27,000 residents per year across a region including Crawford, Monroe, Vernon and La Crosse counties. She said that 92 percent of Couleecap’s donations-funding goes directly to helping clients.

Prairie spikers 

have Senior Night and Pink Night

Prairie du Chien volleyball had an exciting night on Thursday night. It was Senior Night and Pink Night. The team honored its seniors and did some fund-raising and acknowledgments for breast cancer awareness. There was great participation.  

The JV (Fr/So) team won their match two games to one and ended their season with a conference record of 9-1.  The varsity reserve fell to a strong Richland Center team three games to none.
