We Buy Nearby-Shop for a Cause promotes shopping local for the benefit of non-profits

Prairie du Chien’s downtown retailers are continuously trying to attract shoppers to Blackhawk Avenue. Especially with Christmas coming, and Halloween now over, a new event aims to help four local non-profits, while also getting people downtown to buy merchandise.

We Buy Nearby-Shop for a Cause is a downtown promotion involving 13 main street merchants, Thursday, Nov. 9 through Saturday, Nov. 11. Customers can shop at the stores and, with each transaction, choose one of four organizations to receive a percentage of their purchase. Each retailer has selected a different discount, or percentage, to donate per sale; most range from 5 to 15 percent.

Non-profit entities benefitting from the donations will include Prairie du Chien Public Schools, the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library, Crossing Rivers Health Hospice and Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter.

Efforts continue, hard work achieved at Brodtville School

Brodtville School Preservation Inc. has completed a significant scope of work at the one-room schoolhouse in Wyalusing Township in the past year and a half.

“I’m proud to say we really got a lot done this year,” said Joe Stagman, a member of the committee.

The 153-year-old school has been cleaned and painted inside, the front steps re-cemented, a new roof installed and a new handicap ramp built where the back addition previously stood. A clean-up day in July 2016 brought about 30 people to the property and was a big help in this process.

“The next thing on the agenda is water and sewer,” said Chuck Stagman, chair of the Brodtville School Preservation committee. He said they’ve been quoted $35 per foot for drilling and casing, “and we’re hoping we don’t have to go more than 100 feet to hit water.” The group is also looking at installing at least a 1,000-gallon holding tank as part of that project.

PdC chamber tailgate fundraiser in support of McGregor tornado relief

McGregor, Marquette and Prairie du Chien are, in some ways, one large community. So when McGregor was devastated by an EF1 tornado July 19, members of the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce were compassionate, wanting to do something to help their partners in local business.

The chamber decided a border battle tailgate party would be a suitably fun and enticing fundraiser in support of the McGregor/Marquette Chamber of Commerce, as they assist McGregor businesses with tornado recovery.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the PdC Chamber will sponsor an Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Wisconsin Badgers Fundraiser Tailgating Party at Old Man River in McGregor. The big game starts at 2:30 p.m., and doors will open at 12:30. There will be a suggested donation asked for admission. In addition to the game on TV, live music and an auction will keep attendees busy as burgers and brats are served and beverage tickets are available for purchase.

Saints and Soles 5K Fundraiser

The second annual Saints and Soles 5K and Kids Half-Mile Race was held on Saturday, Oct. 28. This is the beginning of the Kids Half-Mile Race in which about 20 youngsters participated, running several blocks around Prairie Catholic School. (Photos by Rose Ziel)

Spencer DeHart was the second-place overall winner of the 5K and first-place among youth participating in the 3.1-mile race.

Stetson Zeeh was elated at the finish line of the kids race.
