Fisherman falls through on Gremore Lake

 

An area fisherman was rescued after falling through thin ice Saturday in rural Prairie du Chien.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff's Department, at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, the county dispatch center was notified that a man had fallen through the ice on Gremore Lake. Roger Swatek, 65, of Wauzeka, was ice fishing when the ice gave way and he fell into the water. Other fishermen attempted to help Swatek when they became stranded in their ice fishing sleds in the open water. Another fisherman came and assisted the Bridgeport Fire Department with the rescue by utilizing his air boat. Swatek was taken to shore and transported to Crossing Rivers Health for medical evaluation.

On Thursday, Dec. 14, the Prairie du Chien wrestling team hosted Belmont/Platteville in the conference opener for both squads. It was also Parents’ Night for the wrestlers and cheerleaders. 

Prior to the start of the varsity action, Clayton DuCharme picked up his first career victory in the JV 145# match.

Soldiers Grove man charged with fifth OWI

A 66-year-old Soldiers Grove man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (fifth or sixth offense), and one count of possession of marijuana.

Mark B. Sherry faces up to 10.5 years in prison and $26,000 in fines if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a state trooper was on duty in the village of Soldiers Grove when he noticed a vehicle with too dark of window tint than is allowed by law. The trooper pulled the vehicle over and smelled the odor of intoxicants when he made contact with the driver.

Community members can eat together this Christmas Day

‘Tis the season of togetherness. Such holiday spirit will be bountiful at the Community Christmas Dinner at Prairie du Chien High School on Monday, Dec. 25. Dine in at noon, pick up carryouts between 1 and 2 p.m., or deliveries will be available throughout Prairie du Chien until 2 p.m. as well.

A traditional Christmas dinner will be served, including turkey and ham, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, squash, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and dessert. The meal is available to all, free of charge, and is furnished by community donations and volunteers.

Deliveries must be ordered in advance by calling 326-8321. Reservations for those eating in as well as those taking carryouts are appreciated by calling the same number.

Due to the construction at the high school, community members are asked to enter through the back parking lot, door H.

Couleecap Food Pantry to distribute 200 meal baskets to people in need Dec. 21

The Couleecap Food Pantry in Prairie du Chien is assembling enough holiday meal baskets this season to provide a Christmas dinner and all the trimmings for 200 households in need, according to Jann Sturmer, Couleecap clothing center and food programs coordinator.

Food pantry clients, families or individuals who find themselves in need for any reason are invited to stop by the food pantry on Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m., to pick up a meal basket. The offering will be available until all 200 are gone.

Each meal basket will include a choice of meat (ham or pork roast), a bag of fresh potatoes, fresh oranges, the ingredients to make green bean casserole and other side dishes, and a dessert.

The inmates from the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution have been enlisted to volunteer with distributing the meals to those visiting the pantry Thursday morning.

The Wauzeka-Steuben boys basketball team remained unbeaten after edging host Seneca 55-51 in a Ridge and Valley contest Thursday night. 

The Hornets improved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference action. They will host Kickapoo on Dec. 12.
