Boy injured when kicked in head by horse

On March 4, at 5:42 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a 911 call about an 11-year-old boy who had been kicked in the head by a horse at 41278 Hilltop Lane in the township of Scott.

An investigation was conducted and determined the horse was tied up inside a barn on the property. The boy was riding a stand up scooter behind the horse when it became spooked. The horse backed up and kicked, striking the boy in the head above his right eye. The blunt force initially knocked the boy unconscious but he eventually regained consciousness while on scene.

The boy was transported by Med Flight to UW–Madison. The extent of his injuries are unknown.

Public hearing set for city of PdC water rate increase

The Prairie du Chien Common Council’s Tuesday night meeting involved a number of informational items as well as some technicalities to approve.

First, it was noted that a public hearing regarding a probable water rate increase is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, at 10 a.m., in conference room no. 2 at city hall. The city has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) to increase the water rates. According to a notice to water customers, the increase is necessary due to a 54.61 percent increase in gross plant investment and a 31.99 percent increase in operating expenses since the last water rate case was completed in 2009.

By Correne Martin

Seneca eighth grader Storie Recker is creating quite a story for herself in academics.

For the third consecutive year, Storie has won not only the local spelling bee, but also the sectional spelling bee—meaning she’ll compete at the Wisconsin State Scripps National Spelling Bee, this year, for the third time.

As if that isn’t enough of an accomplishment, she’s achieved an incredible three-peat in National Geographic Bee contests as well, having won the local and sectional geography bees for three years in a row. Yet again, she’s earned her spot in the state geography bee this year.

Donation equips all Prairie du Chien squads with less-lethal beanbag shotguns

Duane, Misty and Kirsten Rogers, of Prairie du Chien, recently made a donation to the Prairie du Chien Police Department that has equipped all of the department’s squad cars with less-lethal 12 gauge shotguns that shoot beanbag rounds. (Submitted photos)

The Prairie du Chien Police Department now has all of its squad cars equipped with less-lethal 12 gauge shotguns that shoot beanbag rounds. They are categorized and impact munitions and are the equivalent of using a baton, but at a greater distance.

The purchase and upgrade to existing equipment was made possible by a financial donation from the Rogers Family—Duane, Misty and Kirsten. Misty attended the department’s 2017 citizens academy and inquired about its less lethal options at that time. When she learned that only Prairie du Chien supervisors were equipped and trained to use the previous options, the Rogers family stepped forward and made this possible.

Local woman’s life saved by good Samaritans

Donna Teynor had a tragic experience Sept. 15, 2017, when she crashed her 1971 three-wheeled Cushman Truckster. Police Chief Chad Abram was one of several good Samaritans who was there immediately after the crash, and utilized life-saving measures to assure Donna’s didn’t lose her right leg or her life. Donna Teynor is still alive, and she still has her right leg, because the finest Samaritans showed up at the right place and time, Sept. 15, 2017.

It was a seasonal fall day on St. Feriole Island. Donna had been at the county building in Prairie, tending to flowers, as she does for many of the area’s beautiful parks. She was driving her 1971 three-wheeled Cushman Truckster west on Washington Street toward the city’s Memorial Gardens. She attempted to make a left-hand turn toward the Moore building and, as she rounded the corner, the steering wheel snapped hard to the left.
