Bluff View principal charged with physical abuse of a child

Prairie du Chien Bluff View Intermediate School Principal Aaron Amundson was charged in Crawford County Circuit Court April 11 with one count of the physical abuse of a child.

Amundson, 43, faces up to 3.5 years of imprisonment and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a Prairie du Chien police officer met with Dennis Knight, Melody Cox and their son on March 24. Knight wanted to speak to an officer regarding his son being assaulted in school, the complaint said.

Crawford, Clayton, Allamakee counties launch market analysis

Driftless Development, Inc., the newly formed economic development organization for Crawford County, is partnering with Allamakee and Clayton counties in Iowa, on a new market analysis study of the greater Prairie du Chien market area. As a part of the study, residents and business owners in the region are encouraged to participate in a short survey including questions about shopping habits and preferences; perceptions of the communities where they live, shop and work; satisfaction with various aspects of the region; resources that could most support local businesses; and challenges they face.

Water rate increase 32.59 percent average for PdC residents

A water rate increase will be effective in Prairie du Chien for service rendered on and after its next reading date, June 1. The city water department received authorization from the Public Service Commission and the common council approved the action at its meeting Tuesday, April 10.

According to a memo from Water Superintendent Larry Gates, the increase is necessary due to a 54.61 percent increase in gross plant investment and a 31.99 percent increase in operating expenses since the last water rate case was completed in 2009.

Seneca grad to appear on ‘Forged in Fire’

Pat Biggin (right), a Seneca High School alumnus, works with his friend’s dad, Mike, on making a few knives for his 60th birthday. They used a lemon tree branch for the handles, since it was a tree his deceased son had planted in their back yard in elementary school. The tree had died but they saved the branch to be used in something special. Biggin was chosen to appear on the History Channel show, “Forged in Fire: Knife or Death,” airing on Tuesdays, beginning April 17, at 9 p.m.

This piece shows a test blade that Biggin just finished in an effort to replicate an original.

A Seneca High School graduate will appear in the History Channel TV series, “Forged in Fire: Knife or Death,” on Tuesdays, beginning April 17, at 9 p.m. The series focuses on extreme cutting performance of hand-created knife blades. Contestants will face challenges with their blades and attempt to “pass” them. 

Pat Biggin, a 2006 Seneca graduate and knifemaker since 2005, was selected for the show by application. He saw an advertisement on a Facebook knifemaker group page and sent out a letter of interest in September 2017. He was  phone interviewed, Skype interviewed and then cast on the show.

PdC Country Club

It is not yet known what the loft will be used for. The loft is a relatively late addition.

The new banquet and dining room is nearing completion.

Both teams were strong on the mound on Tuesday but Wauzeka-Steuben was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over Seneca in Ridge and Valley baseball action. 

A single by Noah Allan in the first inning was a positive for Seneca.

Seneca defeated host Wauzeka-Steuben 12-8 in a Ridge and Valley softball game Tuesday afternoon.

Haley Wall earned the mound win. She allowed 8 runs on 9 hits and issued 7 walks while fanning 10.

Siena Krachey took the loss. She gave up 12 runs on 16 hits and issued 3 walks and whiffed 1.

Service truck rear ends grain truck on Hwy. 18 Bypass

A semi hauling grain was stalled along the Highway 18 Bypass Wednesday afternoon when a service truck came along and rear ended it, causing fuel leakage, a couple fires and a mess from the grain. No one was injured but both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed. (Submitted photo)

On April 4, at about 4:50 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department was dispatched to a two-vehicle traffic crash on the Highway 18 Bypass near the intersection of East LaPointe Street in Prairie du Chien.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Randy Thornton, 60, of Marquette, Iowa, was traveling west on 18 in a 2018 Peterbilt utility truck when he collided with a 1990 International semi-tractor trailer that was disabled on the highway.
