River Ridge defeated visiting Wauzeka-Steuben 5-3 in a nonconference baseball game Thursday afternoon.

The Timberwolves scored 2 runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.

River Ridge scored 3 more in the fourth to increase the lead to 5-0.

Werner Herman Siegenthaler

 

Werner Herman Siegenthaler passed away peacefully on Friday, March 30, at Boscobel Care and Rehab. He struggled with Parkinsons, but never complained. He continued to live his life the best he could with the support of his loving wife and family along with the caring staff at Boscobel Care and Rehab and St. Croix Hospice.

Wauzeka-Steuben bested host River Ridge 16-1 in a nonconference softball game Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets scored 5 runs in the top of the second inning to go up 5-0. 

Wauzeka-Steuben scored 2 runs in the fourth and 2 more in the fifth to increase their lead to 9-0.

White nose syndrome continues to spread

The recent discovery of white nose syndrome in bats in Spook Cave in Iowa shows that the disease is continuing to spread relatively rapidly.

In 2016, the number of bats in Spook Cave near McGregor surpassed 300. In 2017 only eight bats were found. In 2018, just four bats were located.

PdC City Council District 1 candidates

A retired three-term incumbent is being challenged by a full-time law enforcement officer who’s new to politics in the city of Prairie du Chien’s first district common council election, Tuesday, April 3. Ron Leys is opposed by challenger Nathan Bremmer in the race. The two will appear in a candidate debate Tuesday, March 27, at 6 p.m., at city hall. Both took some time last week to answer a series of questions regarding city issues. Their responses follow.

Primary winners vie for W-S School Board seat

Political newcomers Mara Hird and Kathleen Schwartz will face off in the April 3 spring election to the Wauzeka-Steuben School Board. The two women earned the right to contest one another for the seat by receiving more votes than incumbent and board president Bill Marfilius in the Feb. 20 primary. 

Hird is a lifelong district resident and People’s State Bank consumer loan officer in Wauzeka. She is married with two young children.

Schwartz has lived 10 years in the district and is a De Soto Middle School teacher. She is married with two adult children.
