Peter Charles Klema

Peter Charles Klema left us unexpectedly and much too soon, at the age of 54, on June 8, at home with his mother at his side.

Peter was born Dec. 25, 1963, to parents Michael and Edith (Zeeh) Klema of rural Wauzeka and what a wonderful Christmas present he was! He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1982. He then continued his education and attended Fennimore Vocational School.

He was currently working the last 16 years at EMC in Fennimore. He enjoyed auctions, fishing, riding his Harley, watching NASCAR and Packers, and just spending time with his family and friends.

Pete is survived by his mother, Edith Klema; a family of brothers, Kim (Cinda), Wauzeka, Edward (Deb), Wauzeka, and James, Gainsville, Fla. He is also survived by a daughter, Amber Houston, Dearborn Heights, Mich.; sister-in-law Michelle Klema, Prairie du Chien; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

River Ridge fair educates both the students and attendees

Pictured is the fifth grade class of 2000 during their state fair while attendees visited their booths. (Submitted photos)

By Rachel Mergen

Each year, fifth grade students at River Ridge find themselves faced with the biggest project of their grade level: the state fair. The project began in retired teacher Judy Drone’s social studies classroom around 1992 and has opened students’ eyes to states across the country ever since.

“The crowds that we get have really increased over the years. We get parents, grandparents and neighbors, which is wonderful. It’s definitely been a good community focus,” noted current fifth grade teacher Kris Petrowitz. Throughout the school year, her students learn about the 50 states. “It’s a good culmination at the end of the year.”

The Blackhawks were regional champions and conference champions with a 10-0 record in the SWC.
The Pointers improved to 17-4 on the season. They were 11-2 in the SWAL, finishing second to Fennimore. Mineral Point defeated top seeded Wisconsin Heights 4-3 in the sectional semifinal.

In Prairie du Chien, the city water and wastewater departments are starting a seven- to nine-year case study of its phosphorus levels. While the city limits its own pollutants and treats the phosphorus discharged from the wastewater treatment plant, what can community members do to help keep the potential for problematic phosphorus levels to a minimum?

In short, you can:

•use fertilizer responsibly,

•don’t over water gardens and yards,
