Dousman Family

In the late 1820’s, Hercules L. Dousman came to Prairie du Chien. He was a clerk for Joseph Rollete, who’s widow, Jane Fisher Rollette, married Hercules in 1844. 

Hercules was a very wealthy businessman, who purchased great amounts of land in the Prairie du Chien area, along with investing in steam boats, lumber, railroads, and stocks and bonds.

Hercules and Jane had one child, Louis Dousman, who married Nina Sturgis. Nina and Louis had five children, Violet, Virginia, Nina, Louis and Judith.

The Dousman House, originally called the Railway House, was built in 1864, by the Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien Railroad.

Parmalee to take Crawford County Fair stage Friday

“At the end of the day, we’re in this together,” Matt Thomas, member of the platinum-selling band Parmalee, noted about the benefits of being able to work with his family and friend. His brother Scott, cousin Barry Knox and childhood best friend Josh McSwain make up the rest of the band. The band will be rocking the Crawford County Fair on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m., with Smoking Gun Showdown as their opening act.

“There are so many layers of history,” Mary Antoine, with the Pairie du Chien Historical Society, stated. “There used to be so many structures in Prairie du Chien that represented the various layers of history.

But demolition, sadly, has removed many of these historic structures from the present city. Some, though, still stand and are being protected by the historical societies both locally and nationally.

“Each one has a story. Each one relates to individuals. Each one is a tangible remnant of Prairie du Chien,” she added. “Houses aren’t just buildings, they are the containers of stories, because people lived in them. Every person has a story. The people are gone, but where they lived still remains.”

Linda J. Konichek

Linda J. Konichek, of Fennimore and formerly of Prairie du Chien, passed away on her 69th birthday, Wednesday, Aug. 15. 

She was born Aug. 15, 1949, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Donald and June (Reinhardt) Hand. Linda married John Konichek, Feb. 3, 1968, at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien. She worked as a cook for several restaurants in the Prairie du Chien area and also in the manufacturing industry for companies such as Monona Wire and Prairie Industries.

Cecilia M. Valley Steinberg

Cecilia M. Valley Steinberg, 101, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully with her loving daughters by her side on Thursday, Aug. 16, in Benson, Ariz. 

She was born June 17, 1917, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Charles and Celia (Strnad) Valley. She began working at the Crawford County Courthouse while in high school in all departments. She graduated top of her class in 1935. She married the love of her life, Milton “Shorty” Steinberg on January 30, 1937. Together they raised four fabulous children.

Lowell D. Forde

Lowell D. Forde, 78, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Aug. 20, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 30, 1940, in Decorah, the son of Walter and Gladys (Hulquist) Forde. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Suzanne Nodland Faldet on July 4, 199,3 in Las Vegas, Nev. Lowell worked as a barge captain on the Mississippi River for many years. He was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien and loved picnics.

Pilots land in Prairie while advocating for flying with diabetes

Only eight countries currently allow pilots with insulin-treated diabetes to fly. Though the U.S. is one of them, two European pilots are determined to lift that number higher. 

The duo landed a plane in Prairie du Chien July 28, in an effort to break the world record for visiting the most U.S. states in 24 hours, extending the record from 23 to 29 states in hopes of raising awareness for pilots with type 1 diabetes.

Douglas Gairns, 54, a Scotland native, and Thor Dahl, 24, from Norway, both have type 1 diabetes. They each grew up with boyhood dreams of flying but were grounded upon diagnosis.

Parents sue in son’s 2017 drowning in PdC

Wacouta Aquatic Park in Prairie du Chien has rectified a number of violations at its outdoor pool since the August 2017 drowning of a 4-year-old.

The parents of the 4-year-old boy who drowned at the Prairie du Chien public pool last August are suing the city and the school district for his wrongful death. The family, which is represented by Trial Lawyers for Justice, has requested a jury trial and is seeking an unknown amount of damages.

According to documents filed in Crawford County Court recently, Kurt Warrington and Rachael Warrington, parents of the late Kashton, claim their son died because the city and school district were “negligent in their supervision and custody of [Kashton].”

Catch fair fever at 160th Crawford County Fair

The 160th Crawford County Fair is set for Aug. 22-26 in Gays Mills. This year’s theme is “Fair Fever – Catch the Fun!” Area communities are invited to celebrate all weekend, with a special observance for the 160th anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 12 p.m.

Advance fair ticket sales will be available until Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 4 p.m., at the fair office and Crawford County UW-Extension office. Advance season gate passes will cover all four days.

Aside from the Crawford County 4-H and FFA youth who show and display everything from goats and cattle to plants and farm dioramas, the midway offers carnival rides for all ages, Thursday through Sunday, from 12:30 p.m. to close. Earl’s Rides provides the midway entertainment. Ride tickets and wristbands can be purchased on-site.

The Prairie du Chien Blackhawks opened up their 2018 football season on Friday night against visiting LaCrosse Aquinas. Aquinas (0-1) traveled to Prairie du Chien looking for revenge after dropping the season opener two years in a row to the Hawks (1-0).
