Man hurt when his motorcycle hits deer

On Sept. 13, at 6:22 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a motorcycle versus deer crash with injuries on County Highway C at Chellevold Road in the township of Freeman. 

Mark C. Tallman, 54, La Crosse, was operating a 2000 Honda Goldwing motorcycle westbound on County Highway C at Chellevold Road when a deer entered the roadway. Tallman struck the deer with his motorcycle and was ejected into the eastbound lane of traffic. Tallman was wearing a helmet. Tallman sustained serious injuries and was transported to Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse. 

Assisting on scene were the Ferryville First Responders, Ocooch Mountain Rescue and the Gays Mills Fire Department.

Lloyd E. Snodgrass

Lloyd E. Snodgrass, 83, of Boscobel, passed away at his home, surrounded by family, on Friday, Sept. 14. He lived and farmed in the Boscobel area most of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Snodgrass, of Boscobel; a daughter, Betty Snodgrass, of Prairie du Chien; a son, Ethan (Ramona) Kord of Boscobel; six grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren; nine brothers-in-law, five sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Leroy and Steven; a son, Ralph; a brother in infancy; two sisters-in-law, June Copus and Belva Copus, also his father and mother in-law.

Timothy William Mason

Timothy William Mason, 67, of Marquette, Iowa, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. Tim was born on Oct. 8, 1950, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Charles J. and Cecelia Margaret (O’Brien) Mason. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School and went on to attend college at both NIACC in Mason City, Iowa, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Prairie du Chien chamber presents annual awards

The Chamber honored Shihata’s Orchard and Check’s Antiques with Golden Anniversary Awards for 50 years in business. Pictured (from left) are Dave and Linda Shihata, Mark and Ronna DuCharme, Ruth Check-Gates and Renee Martin.

Representing the Jaycees, which earned the Outstanding Service Award, were Tarah Marx, Brianna Mullikin and Tori Varo.

Drs. Mark Fohey and Steve Kurth have run Dental Associates in Prairie du Chien for 25 years, which earned them recognition from the chamber last week.

Justin, Jen and Jason Cathman, owners of Culver’s in Prairie du Chien, were awarded honors at the chamber banquet for investing in their business and community in 2018.

A number of deserving businesses, individuals and civic organizations were honored at the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation Sept. 13, at the Prairie du Chien Country Club.

Mississippi Meats was named Business of the Year, at the Prairie du Chien Country Club. Carl Colsch and Chris Herbst opened the specialty meat and grocery store at Blackhawk Junction in January 2017. They felt the community was the perfect, friendly, small town and tourist destination in which to do so. Both had experience in running a meat distribution company and also working in grocery stores for years. The store has only grown and continues to deliver great products coupled with top-notch customer service. It has become a staple in Prairie du Chien’s business community.

Several area schools converged upon LaRiviere Park for the Prairie du Chien Invitational cross country meet on a relatively hot Thursday afternoon.

The meet is a bit different in that runners from different schools compete together on five teams called the Pacemakers, Voyageurs, Prairie Dogs, Lead Miners and Joggernauts. 

Many runners wore various colors of paint and designs on their faces and arms and it was a fun meet for all involved.

Competitive state-wide grant awarded to Prairie du Chien District

The Prairie du Chien School District is one of 20 schools that received the maximum amount of $75,000 from a highly competitive state-wide grant from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). 

The Prairie du Chien Healthy Children and Families Project 2018-19 will deliver sustainable mental health services for students and families of the Prairie du Chien School District.

“The grant is just awesome. It’s so exciting. I can’t wait,” said Prairie du Chien School Counselor Adrienne Udelhoven, who helped apply for the non-matching grant.

2nd annual PdC Cross Country Youth Race set

The second annual Prairie du Chien Cross Country Youth Race will take place on Monday, Sept. 17 at 5:15 p.m. at La Riviere Park in Prairie du Chien. The youth race is open to all elementary-aged students from any school district. Middle school cross country races start at 4:30, so come out early, support your Blackhawks, and join the fun.

River Ridge runners do well

The River Ridge girls cross country team won the 10-school Goat Hill Classic in North Crawford on Tuesday. The girls finished with 31 points. The girls won the first ever plaque for River Ridge in cross country. The River Ridge boys team took second behind Wauzeka-Steuben at the Goat Hill Classic. Above are the River Ridge runners who won medals by finishing in the top 10. They are Glenna Marshall, Riley Klein, Faith Webb, Bradley Hoffman and Brett Kerscher. Platteville defeats PdC soccer

The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team hosted the Platteville Hillmen Tuesday night. It was Parents’ Night and at halftime parents of players and managers were introduced and thanked for their unending support and dedication to the players and the program.

Platteville took early control of the game, but the Blackhawks defense put up a tight wall and stopped the Hillmen attack including a penalty kick stop by goalie Ryan Thien. Late in the half, 44:05, Platteville found a crack in the Prairie’s defensive shield and slipped in the score to take a 1-0 lead at the half.
