Violet G. Wackershauser

Violet G. Wackershauser, 87, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born Jan. 10, 1931, the daughter of George and Mamie Lewig. She attended school in the Wauzeka area and was a lifelong homemaker. Violet was married to Loren Koecke on Sept. 13, 1969, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Following Loren’s death in 2002, she married Virgil Wackershauser. Violet was an artist at heart and enjoyed quilting and gardening in her free time, and she loved to dance. 

Violet is survived by various members of her extended family and by many friends.

In addition to her parents, Violet was preceded in death by her husbands, Loren Koecke and Virgil Wackershauser.

William B. 'Bill' Tubbs

William B. “Bill” Tubbs, 65, of Bagley, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018. 

He was born in Prairie du Chien, on Aug. 6, 1953, the son of Robert and Barbara (Govier) Tubbs. 

Following his education, Bill was a sales consultant for a number of years at H&S Sales, specializing in cabinetry. He then worked at Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. in Prairie du Chien until his retirement. In his free time, he enjoyed photography.

Bill is survived by his siblings, Thomas (Roxanne) Tubbs, and Beth (Bruce) Fortner; nephews, Brian and Alan (Kate) Tubbs; and an uncle, Floyd Welsch.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Tamara 'Tammy' Marie (Regenold) Kleitsch

Tamara “Tammy” Marie (Regenold) Kleitsch, 59, of Monona, Iowa, passed away in her home on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2018. 

She was born in Independence, Iowa, on June 26, 1959, the daughter of Ronald J. and Kay F. (Mersch) Regenold.

Tammy graduated from Wapsie Valley High School in 1977, and furthered her education at Hawkeye Community College.

Tammy was united in marriage to Thomas Kleitsch in Fairbank, Iowa. They later divorced. Tammy was employed at Wal-Mart in Prairie du Chien, earning her 10-year pin this past Friday. She enjoyed being with friends, watching her favorite TV shows, and she loved her dog, Fancy. Tammy was a very thoughtful, kind and caring person to all who knew her. She will be missed.

Marquette Road road is open

It was a long spring, summer and fall in Prairie du Chien, with Marquette Road/Highway 35 construction making travel difficult and giving businesses a challenge, from April 2 through Nov. 30. Yet, the new highway is finally open and traffic can proceed with a better flow now. 

At the official ribbon cutting Friday afternoon at the intersection of La Pointe Street and Marquette, about two dozen city, chamber, business and legislative dignitaries gathered for a short ceremony and ribbon cutting. Then, barricades were removed and the small crowd cheered as the first vehicles passed onto the new roadway.

Some special touches were added to the nooks and crannies of the redesigned Prairie du Chien Memorial Library just in time for its grand opening and ribbon cutting Saturday, Dec. 1.

Swarms of curious patrons joined library and city representatives as well a donors for a ribbon cutting, appreciation ceremony, tours, music, refreshments and kids activities in honor of the completion of the $3.578 million renovation and expansion project. 

Ground was broken for the project Oct. 16, 2017. The new facility officially opened to the public for the first time on Oct. 15, 2018.

Stolen car results in meth bust, additional charges

On Wednesday, Nov. 21, at 9:50 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a stolen vehicle from La Crosse. The stolen vehicle was located by a Crawford County deputy at a residence off of State Highway 35, in the township of Freeman.

A 2005 Chevy Cobalt owned by Mark D. Olson, 39, La Crosse, was taken from his residence. Michelle L. Peck, 35, La Crosse, was found to be in possession of the stolen car. 

During the investigation multiple items of drug paraphernalia were found throughout the car. More than 50 used hypodermic needles were found in the car. Needles were found throughout the front of the car as well as a container in the rear of the car which was more than half full of used needles. Tests showed a positive result for methamphetamine.

Handgun stolen, man arrested, investigation ongoing

On Nov. 28, the Prairie du Chien Police Department responded to the 1000 block of East Wisconsin Street for a report of a theft of a firearm. 

Officers were told that a Taurus 9mm handgun was removed from a residence without the owner’s consent. A short list of individuals who would have known about the handgun was presented by the victim. Multiple valuable items were not removed from the residence in favor of the handgun.

During the course of the investigation, evidence was obtained and Brandon Jacobson, 27, Harpers Ferry, was interviewed by police. Jacobson denied any involvement in the theft of the firearm.

Court dismisses drowning lawsuit on recreational immunity

A wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Prairie du Chien and the Prairie du Chien Area School District for the Aug. 2, 2017, drowning of a 4-year-old boy in the city’s outdoor swimming pool was dismissed in Crawford County court Monday.

Based on Wisconsin Recreational Immunity laws, substitute judge Craig Day ruled to dismiss the claims, brought by Rachael and Kurt Warrington Jr., parents of Kashton, (and the North Central Regional Council of Carpenters Health Fund), against both defendants. Day also ruled the case dismissed since the school district was not properly served court documents.

PdC graduate involved with InSight landing on Mars

A part of Prairie du Chien landed on Mars this week.

Mitch Nelson, a 1990 Prairie du Chien graduate, is a quality assurance engineer for NASA at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif. He had the honor of participating in the InSight mission to Mars, Monday, Nov. 26. The probe, which NASA launched in early May, landed safely Monday at 1:52 p.m. (central standard time) 

In addition to working on the project, Nelson bought “tickets to Mars.” Along with 14,000 other people who had their names land on the Red Planet Monday, the names of Mitch Nelson and his nephew, A.J. Nelson, also made the trip.
