New Prairie du Chien police chief appointed

Prairie du Chien Police Chief Kyle Teynor was sworn into his position by City Clerk Tina Fuller Jan. 7, at 10 a.m., at city hall. He was appointed to the position by the city’s five-man police and fire commission.

By Correne Martin

Fifteen-year Prairie du Chien police officer and former sergeant, Kyle Teynor, 35, was appointed the next chief of police for the city, Jan. 2, and sworn in Jan. 7, by the city clerk. He was selected by the Prairie du Chien Police and Fire Commission after two candidates were interviewed for the chief position.

“This has been a lifelong goal. I grew up across the street from the old police department on Prairie Street and was the kid looking out the window anytime I observed a squad car drive by. Police officers have always been my heroes,” Teynor stated. “Also, policing is a passion and, more importantly, the advancement of the job of policing into a profession is important to me. The steadfast progression of this department is always on my mind.”

Even greater place to swim this winter

Setting out to make the pool deck as safe as possible for patrons at Hoffman Hall, staff researched products that could provide a durable, anti-slip surface. In doing so, they learned that 3M in Prairie du Chien had products that would fit that bill. Collaborating with 3M staff, the perfect matting was chosen. Several rolls of vinyl Nomad were donated to Hoffman Hall, valued at $1,000 apiece, for placement along the outside edge of the pool and inside the men’s and women’s bathrooms. The Nomad is resistant to grease and oil that swimmers’ feet could otherwise leave on the deck, it helps protect the original 1962 floor surface and it covers up the old non-slip strips. The Nomad is also easy for the staff to clean. So far, patrons are loving it, according to pool staff, and only one roll has been used. The second roll will be added in other areas at Hoffman Hall and likely at the city’s outdoor pool as well.

Familiar owners take over Eastman Locker

Kevin and Jane Schaaf (right) sold the Eastman Locker to Grant and Nikki Stluka and family. Both are pictured here on the day the sale closed at Adams Auction & Real Estate.

The age of the Eastman Locker was not known by either owners, though there’s a neat picture of it inside the store from back in 1912 when it was a general store.

After 13 and a half years of ownership under Kevin and Jane Schaaf, the Eastman Locker was sold to Grant and Nikki Stluka, who took over Dec. 31.

“This is big news for a small town,” Jane noted.

The deal closed through Adams Auction & Real Estate on New Year’s Eve, and as soon as 2019 started, the Stlukas were in the meat locker plant, ready for business as usual. The same employees will remain in Brian Cipra, Matt Lorenz, Tim Sprosty and Roy Kramer, and the hours, services and products are expected to be much the same.

Cayden never made a sound or opened his eyes during his first official interview last week.

“Most people aren’t as blessed to come into the world with what he has,” the dad of the 2019 New Year’s baby in Prairie du Chien remarked quietly, looking at the tiny face of his two-day-old son, Cayden Allen.

Cayden was born to Jordan Nance and Christopher Conant, of Prairie du Chien, just 23 minutes after midnight on Jan. 1, at Crossing Rivers Health. He is the couple’s first child together, but joins Conant’s older son, age 6, in their loving family. His middle name was chosen in memory of Cayden’s late grandfather, who passed away last May.

Another SWC foe, another win. The beat continues for the fifth-ranked PdC grapplers as they dismantled Richland Center 60-12 on Thursday evening in front of a raucous bunch of PdC wrestling faithful. Prior to the meet, Traeton Saint and Reid Koenig were presented plaques detailing their 100 career wins. Following that, a great number of local wrestling sponsors were recognized and thanked for their generosity in helping the team achieve their goals and be able to travel throughout the state. Brian and Jeananne Dillman were also recognized and thanked, as they have very generously purchased a new competition mat for the wrestling team.
