The Hawks boys basketball team returned home with an afternoon affair against Barneveld on Saturday, Jan. 26. Barneveld came in winning seven games in a row and the Hawks winning the past five games.

Hawkettes advance to state

The Prairie du Chien High School Hawkettes traveled to Watertown, Wis., for the WACPC Regional Dance Competition on Saturday, Jan. 26. They performed in the D5 Pom Division and the D3 Kick Division. The team placed fifth in Pom and first in Kick. The first-place finish makes them the Regional Champions and advances them to state. The State Dance Competition is Saturday, Feb. 2 in La Crosse. “We’d love to see some familiar faces in the crowd cheering us on!” said Head Coach Bobbi Gofus. Counterfeit bills passed around

Recently, there was a counterfeit $100 bill that was attempted to be passed at a Prairie du Chien restaurant.

Police Chief Kyle Teynor said the investigation is ongoing, and that a woman (the suspect) was photographed but she has not been found or identified from the photograph.

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce will welcome area ice fishing enthusiasts to Prairie du Chien for the 69th Annual Ice Fisheree weekend to be held Feb. 1, 2 and 3 with headquarters at The Crooked Oar Bar and Marina just north of Prairie du Chien on County K.

Pecatonica-Argyle won the dual meet by a score of 45-17.

Bell Center, county in dispute with federal emergency management

The village of Bell Center and Crawford County are in a dispute with FEMA over funding for the costs of damage to the bridge over the Kickapoo River on Sand Creek Road during the 2016 Kickapoo River flood.

Iowa man arrested for methamphetamine possession

On Jan. 21, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit observed a 1984 Chevrolet C30 truck swerving over the shoulder of the road several times, and had an equipment violation. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle on the Highway 18 bypass and Rice Street in the city of Prairie du Chien. The driver was identified as Daniel Trappe, 55, Colesburg, Iowa.  In speaking with Trappe, the deputy observed him to be exhibiting signs of nervousness and signs of drug use. 

K-9 Breck was utilized for an open free air sniff of the vehicle, alerting to the presence of one or more controlled substances in the vehicle. In the vehicle, deputies located a false compartment cylinder, which had crystal like substance inside. The crystal substance field tested positive for methamphetamine.

PdC drowning lawsuit appealed

The parents of a drowned Prairie du Chien boy have appealed the dismissal of their wrongful death lawsuit. 

Kurt and Rachael Warrington filed their lawsuit after their son Kashton, 4, was found unresponsive at Wacouta Aquatic Park in Prairie du Chien during a swimming lesson on Aug. 2, 2017. 

The lawsuit had alleged that the death occurred because city and Prairie du Chien School District personnel were negligent in their supervision and custody of Kashton.

In November, Judge Craig Day dismissed the case in Crawford County Circuit Court. Day cited Wisconsin’s “recreational immunity” statute which limits a property owner’s liability for an injury to, or caused by, a person engaging in recreational activity on the owner’s property.

Local Knights of Columbus earn top council honors in diocese

The Knights of Columbus Campion Council 1840 has gone from near extinction to a position of distinction, having increased its membership 350 percent this past year—just in time for the council’s 100 year anniversary. 

“I don’t know what it is; it’s a spark that hit around here. But it was time,” said Steve Mercaitis, grand knight of the Prairie du Chien men’s volunteer service organization.

44th Eagles Telethon ‘A Family Reunion’ this Saturday

This wishing well, made by Scott and Tom Paulson, from an idea of Gail Zirngibl’s, will be at the Eagles Telethon for youth to bring their wishes and coins and drop them in.

“Forty-four years speaks volumes for our community—that it’s willing to have this telethon and showcase what Prairie du Chien really is and what we have done.” The never speechless Tom Nelson said this about the Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon and its dedicated committee, talent and viewers who’ve, together, brought a “breath of fresh air” to the middle of winter and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for medical research since 1976.

“It’s an opportunity to spotlight our youth, our working class and us old timers who still choose to live in Prairie du Chien. Through that process, we raise a little money,” Nelson added.
