8 year old raises money for water in South Sudan

Kye Czajkowski Higgins, 8, of Prairie du Chien, is considered an Amazing Kid by Water for South Sudan for his efforts to raise funds for the organization.

Water for South Sudan (WFSS) works with passionate individuals from around the globe, now including an enthusiastic 8 year old from Prairie du Chien.

The organization’s donors contribute in ways large and small to make its work possible. Its most recent monthly newsletter highlighted local boy, Kye Czajkowski Higgins, as an “Amazing Kid” for his efforts to support clean water, hygiene and sanitation projects in South Sudan.

Last year, his brother, Logan, read “A Long Walk to Water,” a book by Linda Sue Park based on WFSS founder Salva Dut’s experience as a “Lost Boy of Sudan.” Kye then decided to read the book and was moved to start a fundraiser to help.

Cycling a life changer for Bloomington woman

Crystal rides her beargrease through the snow as often year-round as possible. One of her favorite places to cycle is at Yellow River State Forest in Harpers Ferry, Iowa.

Crystal Kovacs is pictured with her sons, Dan and Brett, three years ago in 2015 and again on Mother’s Day 2018. Not only has she lost 70 pounds and changed her borderline diabetic, high blood pressure and COPD diagnoses, but she has also gained a stronger bond with her family.

Crystal doesn't let the elements phase her any time of the year. She is pictured here at Yellow River State Forest on her Salsa Beargrease.

Crystal is pictured on a Salsa Cutthroat bike, grinding along on the Dirty Kanza course in Kansas.

Crystal Kovacs was selected by Salsa Cycles as one of 16 sponsored athletes around the world to represent their brand.

Crystal Kovacs is living proof that you can be bold, even when you don’t fit the mold of a 20-something fitness trainer.

At the age of 45, with her children nearly raised, Crystal has lost 70 pounds, reversed several health prognoses and propelled her way into an elite class of Salsa Cycles internationally-sponsored athletes who are powering through life’s adventures on the seat of a bicycle.

“Every person has an athlete inside of them who wants out,” the Bloomington resident professed.

CBD a hot new product line

CBD oils, creams, gummies and vape pens are some of the products available at Café Hope in Prairie du Chien.

Tisha Trautsch, RN, BSN, spoke about the history, products and potential benefits of CBD in the local hemp health class at Café Hope in January. (Photos by Correne Martin)

By Correne Martin

Cannabidoil, or CBD, is a cannabis compound extracted from the hemp plant that has shown appealing medical benefits for people seeking relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, seizures, fatigue and other conditions. It does not trigger that feeling of being “high,” like the psychoactive cannabinoid THC does, and there is no evidence of addiction. These reasons make it an attractive supplement for a growing number of Americans, according to Tisha Trautsch, the registered nurse who led a hemp health class Jan. 29, at Café Hope in Prairie du Chien.

Particularly, since hemp was removed in September 2018 from the federal Controlled Substances Act Schedule 1 classification list, and essentially legalized nationally, Trautsch said its usage is soaring.
