Dallas John Valley

Dallas John Valley, 82, of Prairie du Chien, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. He conquered cancer and suffered a 10-year battle with Parkinsons.

Dallas was born July 28, 1936, the son of Carl and Mary (Koecke) Valley.

Caroline Gann Keller

Caroline Gann Keller, 72, of Lake Placid, Fla., passed away peacefully at her home on Jan. 28, 2019, with her family surrounding her. She bravely fought breast cancer in 2007, lung cancer in 2015 and most recently stage IV breast cancer. 

Carol was born Oct. 9, 1947, in Pahokee, Fla., to parents John and Annie George Gann. She grew up in Clewiston, Fla., and graduated from Clewiston High School in 1964.

Garage destroyed but house saved in Seneca fire

A garage was destroyed but the house which was only a few feet away was saved by firefighters battling a blaze on a frigid Tuesday night, Jan. 29, one of the coldest nights of the year so far. 

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department reports that a garage owned by Sara and Matt Wall on Highway 27 about three miles south of Seneca started on fire due to working on equipment in the garage when fumes ignited.

Responding to the scene were the Seneca, Eastman and Gays Mills fire departments, along with Tri-State Regional EMS, Alliant Energy, Seneca First Responders and the sheriff’s department.

Cannabidoil, or CBD, is a cannabis compound extracted from the hemp plant that has shown appealing medical benefits for people seeking relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, seizures, fatigue and other conditions. It does not trigger that feeling of being “high,” like the psychoactive cannabinoid THC does, and there is no evidence of addiction. These reasons make it an attractive supplement for a growing number of Americans, according to Tisha Trautsch, the registered nurse who led a hemp health class Jan. 29, at Café Hope in Prairie du Chien.

Particularly, since hemp was removed in September 2018 from the federal Controlled Substances Act Schedule 1 classification list, and essentially legalized nationally, Trautsch said its usage is soaring.

Hawkettes second at state

The Prairie du Chien High School Hawkettes placed second in Division 3 Kick at the State Dance Competition in La Crosse on Saturday. Above are (back to front, left to right): Morgan Kiesau, Lauren Kennedy, Archi Patel, Rebekah Champion, Kara Katzung, Kina Myers and Caitlin Nolan. This is not the end of the season for the Hawkettes. Be sure to come out to a Prairie du Chien basketball game and catch the Hawkettes during a halftime show. The Hawkettes are also planning a youth camp and details will be sent out to parents and also posted on the Hawkettes’ Facebook page.

A nice, warm 69th Ice Fisheree

Shawn Stone (seated) of Prairie du Chien and Job Wetter of Boscobel are all smiles as they relax in the relative comfort and warmth of the 69th Annual Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree Saturday as mild temperatures in the 40s greeted hundreds of ice anglers of all ages on Gremore Lake and other parts of the Mississippi River. Fishing on Gremore Lake near Fisheree Headquarters, The Crooked Oar Bar and Marina on County K, Shawn and Job, 11, were having decent luck on tip-ups catching good-sized largemouth bass. One largemouth caught by a fishing neighbor on a tip-up in the same area tipped the scale at 3.97 pounds. It was Job’s first ice fishing adventure, and he said he liked watching the tip-ups more than jigging. Ice Fisheree activities were held Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. (Photos by Ted Pennekamp)

Seneca crushed visiting Weston 64-30 in a Ridge and Valley girls basketball game Friday night. 

Seneca increased their record to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the Ridge and Valley. Weston dropped to 2-14 and 2-7.

Seneca will next host Kickapoo on Feb. 5.

Everyone encouraged to take steps to stay safe in extreme cold

Dangerously low temperatures have arrived, and Crawford County Health and Human Services wants to remind residents to take steps to be safe and stay warm.  

“Freezing temperatures, wind chills, and winter storms can cause hypothermia, frostbite, and even death,” said Cindy Riniker, Health Officer. “The best way to stay safe during extreme cold is to be prepared.”

In the 2017-2018 winter season, 38 people died from exposure to extreme cold. To protect yourself and your family during extreme cold, follow these safety tips:

•Stay inside. When possible, stay indoors.

Crash causes power outage in part of Eastman

On Sunday, Jan. 27, at 7:43 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle traffic crash on S. Water Street in the village of Eastman.

Dylan M. Krachey-Yahn, 21, Eastman, was operating a 2000 Ford F 250 southbound on S. Water Street from Sheridan Road when he lost control of his truck and struck a utility pole.
