Project Lifesaver can help ‘bring loved ones home’

There’s a little-known program in Crawford County that could help save someone’s life if they have a tendency to wander. It’s called Project Lifesaver, a sense of security-style system that’s been available in the county since 2010. Since then, about eight to 10 individuals—including seniors, adults with disabilities and at-risk youth—have made use of the wristwatch-like radio technology. At least one person’s system was activated and utilized in tracking them, followed by a safe return.

Prairie grapplers are regional champs

Senior Reid Koenig uses a near side cradle to pin his Belmont/Platteville opponent in the semifinals. Koenig would go on to win in the finals as well.

Junior Traeton Saint wears down his River Valley opponent in the finals. Saint would win the match for first place.

The PdC Blackhawks wrestling team shows off their Regional Championship plaque. This is their second consecutive championship and advances them to Team Sectionals on Tuesday at River Valley where they will wrestle Evansville/Albany in a 6 p.m. semifinal.

Eight Hawk wrestlers advanced to Sectionals. Front row: Bradyn Saint (1st 152#), Traeton Saint (1st 138#), Reid Koenig (1st 145#). Back row: Jerrod Osterkamp (1st 285#), Chase Watson (2nd 126#), Matt Rogge (2nd 113#), Isaac Avery (2nd 160#), Colten Wall (1st 220#).

 

On Saturday, Feb. 9, the WIAA wrestling tournament series started in the state of Wisconsin. Prairie du Chien was host for a WIAA D2 Regional, with seven teams competing for the crown. 

The PDC grapplers showed up to wrestle, and came away with a Regional Championship, marking the second consecutive year the Hawks have done so. PDC scored 234 points on their way to a very convincing win. River Valley finished second with 178 points.

Four injured in head-on bridge collision

On Jan. 26, at 9:24 p.m., Mar-Mac Police responded to a two-vehicle, head-on collision on U.S. Highway 18, the Marquette-Joliet Bridge, in Marquette.

A 2002 Isuzu Trooper, driven by Janita Stavroplus, of McGregor, was heading east on the bridge when the vehicle lost control due to icy road conditions. The vehicle slid across the westbound traffic lane, collided with a concrete barrier, re-entered the roadway, then collided head-on with a westbound 2008 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Chavon Beall, of Prairie du Chien.

Beall, Stavroplus and two passengers, Maria Stavroplus and Cheyenne Murawski, were transported by ambulance to Crossing Rivers Health, in Prairie du Chien, with injuries.

8 year old raises money for water in South Sudan

Kye Czajkowski Higgins, 8, of Prairie du Chien, is considered an Amazing Kid by Water for South Sudan for his efforts to raise funds for the organization.

Water for South Sudan (WFSS) works with passionate individuals from around the globe, now including an enthusiastic 8 year old from Prairie du Chien. 

The organization’s donors contribute in ways large and small to make its work possible. Its most recent monthly newsletter highlighted local boy, Kye Czajkowski Higgins, as an “Amazing Kid” for his efforts to support clean water, hygiene and sanitation projects in South Sudan. 

Last year, his brother, Logan, read “A Long Walk to Water,” a book by Linda Sue Park based on WFSS founder Salva Dut’s experience as a “Lost Boy of Sudan.” Kye then decided to read the book and was moved to start a fundraiser to help.

Cycling a life changer for Bloomington woman

Crystal rides her beargrease through the snow as often year-round as possible. One of her favorite places to cycle is at Yellow River State Forest in Harpers Ferry, Iowa.

Crystal Kovacs is pictured with her sons, Dan and Brett, three years ago in 2015 and again on Mother’s Day 2018. Not only has she lost 70 pounds and changed her borderline diabetic, high blood pressure and COPD diagnoses, but she has also gained a stronger bond with her family.

Crystal Kovacs is living proof that you can be bold, even when you don’t fit the mold of a 20-something fitness trainer. 

At the age of 45, with her children nearly raised, Crystal has lost 70 pounds, reversed several health prognoses and propelled her way into an elite class of Salsa Cycles internationally-sponsored athletes who are powering through life’s adventures on the seat of a bicycle. 

“Every person has an athlete inside of them who wants out,” the Bloomington resident professed.

Lots of winners at 69th Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree

Tim Schlein of Monona, Iowa, was the lucky winner of $5,000 in the grand prize drawing. Schlein said he purchased one ticket at The Crooked Oar Bar and Marina on Saturday, the day that he also fished in the fisheree. Schlein said the nice windfall will go towards house projects. There was a big turnout for the 69th Annual Prairie du Chien Ice Fisheree with about 500 anglers participating on Saturday and Sunday. Headquarters for the event was the Crooked Oar Bar and Marina north of Prairie du Chien on County K.

Those attending had a great time and numerous prizes were awarded. Prize winners were as follows:

Walleye-sauger: First, Eddie Ward, 4.348 pounds. Second, Jerry Ward, 3.612. Third, Ron Tammling, 3.318.

The Prairie du Chien High School girls basketball team continues to roll and has had one of the best starts to a season ever. The Lady Blackhawks are 16-0 as of Feb. 5, which is the third best start in program history and the third longest winning streak as well. Only the 17-0 start in the 1977-1978 season and a 21-0 start in 1982-1983 season are longer.
