Arrest follows hit and run

On Feb. 22, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a two-vehicle hit and run crash in the village of Ferryville. The Crawford County K-9 unit responded and met with the two victims whose vehicles were both legally parking on Main Street. 

It was determined the suspect vehicle left from a parked position and began operating southbound. The suspect vehicle struck the two vehicles, a 2016 Toyota Corolla and a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan. The victim vehicles both sustained damage to their driver’s sides. A witness observed a woman, identified as Jean Boardman, 61, Ferryville, leaving the scene, with damage to her vehicle’s passenger side.

Bloomington man gets 15 years for sexual abuse

A 59-year-old Bloomington man, who is guilty of repeated sexual abuse of a girl over a three-year period, was sentenced to 15 years in prison during a hearing in Grant County Circuit Court Friday. James F. Crubel will receive credit for 339 days already served.

Crubel had faced up to 67 years in prison.

Crubel had pleaded no contest to two counts of exposing genitals to a child and one count each of repeated sexual abuse of the same child with at least three violations of first-degree sexual assault; causing a child younger than 13 to view/listen to a sex act; child enticement-sexual contact; and exposing a child to harmful material.

There were approximately 100 people who filled the courtroom for the hearing on Friday.

Hornet basketball program has unrivaled twin power

The Wauzeka-Steuben High School boys basketball program has written such an explicit narrative this season that you might wonder if there’s something in the water. 

It has little to do with the successful 21-1 record the Hornets have achieved. It’s not that the varsity conference champions secured its first regional win last night. It’s not even the personal achievements (Carter Lomas’ all-time scoring record) or the diverse talents of the team.

It’s something more of a phenomenon. 

It’s an unexplainable marvel really that there are currently four separate sets of twins on the boys basketball team.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is facing an immense challenge. Chancellor Dennis Shields said during his State of the University Address, Feb. 19, the number of high school students nationwide, especially in the upper Midwest, has declined. This means the university must take a multi-pronged approach in order to attract and retain students for the future.

“We want to continue to offer a world-class education that’s affordable and accessible to our students,” said Shields, concluding his address.

Rilla F. Oppriecht

Rilla F. Oppriecht, 94, of rural Eastman, passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, at the Prairie Maison Nursing Home in Prairie du Chien.  

Rilla Fern Kramer was born May 2, 1924, on the Shanghai Ridge family farm, rural Eastman. Rilla was the 10th of 11 children born to Hubert and Mary (Brady) Kramer.

Top seeded Wauzeka-Steuben easily dismantled visiting and 16th seeded Riverdale 99-46 in a WIAA Division 5 Regional boys basketball game Tuesday night. 

The Hornets, ranked sixth in the state in Division 5,  won their 21st game in a row for a 21-1 overall record. Riverdale ended their season at 1-22.

Wauzeka-Steuben will next host eighth seeded Kickapoo in the regional semifinal on Friday, March 1.

On Feb. 25, the Prairie du Chien girls basketball team hosted Wisconsin Dells in Regional Final action. 

Once again, Prairie came out hot and jumped to a 8-2 lead. The Dells continued to fight back to tie the game halfway through the first half. However, PdC played solid defense and was able to go into the half up 25-13.

Underwater repairs to Lock 9 should be done in early March

The Lock and Dam 9 guidewall is under repairs as concrete will fill in voided areas where rip rap rock once was. Work will continue until early March when the navigation season opens on the Mississippi River.

Repairs to the lock extensions at Lock and Dam 9 near Lynxville has been underway since December and is part of a two-year maintenance project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Clarence J. 'Zippy' Reuter

Clarence J. “Zippy” Reuter, 71, of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, at his home. 

 He was born on June 22, 1947, the son of Reaford and Letha (Zenz) Reuter. Zippy graduated from Lancaster High School in 1966.
