Former state governor to deliver Alzheimer’s caregiving presentation

Former Wisconsin Governor Martin Schreiber (1977-79) will be in Prairie du Chien Thursday, April 11, to speak candidly about his book, “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver.” 

This uplifting, free presentation will be given to the public from 10 to 11 a.m. at Hoffman Hall. No registration is required to attend this event; however, respite care is being provided for those who require it in order to attend. Call the Aging and Disability Resource Center at 326-0235 to take advantage of this volunteer service for your loved ones.

Lawler School Lofts nearly complete

The “Chapel” apartment is still under renovation. It features a high ceiling, stained glass and other large, uniquely shaped windows and gold inlay trim on parts of the ceiling. (Photos by Ted Pennekamp)

This is part of the ceiling in the Chapel apartment.

The community center can be used for socializing, watching television and for special gatherings.

This is the kitchen in one of the apartments that have not yet been rented.

Phyllis M. Steiner

Phyllis M. Steiner, 88, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health, with her family by her side.  

She was born June 17, 1930, in New Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Eva (Beckman) Noehl. She married her sweetheart and loving husband of 64 years, “Lefty” Laverne Steiner on May 30, 1953, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Together, they raised five children:  Brad, Dirk, Brian, Gerri and Jennifer. Phyllis was also involved in the daily operation of the family construction business and The Alaskan Canadian Fur Trading Company.  She was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Church and an avid Cubs and Badger fan.  

Lefty preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 2017.

Bales lost from trailer cause crash

One motorist and his passenger escaped injury from a crash in which they hit a round bale on Highway 18 in Wyalusing Township, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. The party responsible for the loose hay bale was also cited after the accident.

Men cited, though no injuries following 2-vehicle collision

On Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:17 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a two-vehicle accident on State Highway 131 at the intersection of County Road S in Haney Township, with road blockage.

Orlan J. Wallin Jr., 70, Blue River, was pulling out from the stop sign at the intersection of County S and State Highway 131 headed westbound in a 1996 Mazda truck. The Wallin vehicle was struck by a northbound vehicle operated by Josh P. Wilson, 34, Wauzeka, who was operating a 2007 Chevy Silverado truck.  The Wilson vehicle continued off the left side of the roadway, struck a county highway sign and came to rest. The Wallin vehicle spun around in the roadway from the impact and came to rest facing eastbound on the roadway.  

Wallin and Wilson both claimed no injuries from the accident.

Driver falls asleep, causes accident involving 3 vehicles

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 5:34 p.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a multi-vehicle crash on Main Street in Ferryville.

Ethan Swiggum, 19, rural Eastman, was driving a 2006 Pontiac van north on Main Street when he fell asleep. His vehicle veered right, hitting a legally parked 2017 Chevy Cruze owned by Stacie Sanborn. The impact pushed the Sanborn vehicle into the rear of a legally parked 2018 Chevy Impala owned by Julia Harris.

Swiggum was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt.

Swiggum’s vehicle sustained front end damage and was towed.

He was cited for inattentive driving.

Combative man may face charges

On Feb. 26, at 8:30 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department was called to the area of the intersection of South Marquette Road and East Wisconsin Street for a report of a man walking in the middle of the street. Officers arrived on scene and found two men in the back seat of a parked vehicle who were involved in an ongoing altercation. The vehicle was parked in a business parking lot.

Officers attempted to make contact with the occupants of the vehicle and found a man bleeding from the face. According to witnesses and friends of this man, he was walking in the roadway and they attempted to get him out of the road when he became combative with them. A physical altercation took place and they were able to get him inside a vehicle in an attempt to take him home.

Traffic stop leads to meth arrest

On Feb. 27, a Crawford County deputy initiated a traffic stop on a 2003 Ford Windstar van for equipment violations on Highway 35 in the village of Ferryville. 

The deputy identified the driver as Nathaniel Olson, 35, La Crosse, and his passenger as Jennifer Carillo, 36, La Crosse. While speaking to the driver, the deputy observed in plain view several used hypodermic needles and also smelled the odor of burnt marijuana emitting from within the vehicle. 

A search of the vehicle was conducted and numerous used hypodermic needles containing suspected methamphetamine residue, over a dozen clear plastic bags containing suspected methamphetamine residue and a digital scale were located within the vehicle. Marijuana paraphernalia was also located within the vehicle.

Crawford County Highway Commissioner suspended for 2 weeks

Crawford County Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock was suspended without pay for two weeks during a Personnel Committee meeting on Feb. 13.

According to meeting minutes, the suspension will be served upon completion of an appeal process, if applicable.

The county needs to go through a notification process before any of the records can be released as to why Pelock was suspended.

The reality of farming today is that the future is uncertain. Farmers attending the 30th annual Farmer Appreciation Luncheon, presented by the Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce Feb. 27, were reminded of that reality, and heard tips for dealing with farm stress from guest presenter Dr. Larry Tranel, 20-year dairy specialist with the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
