Area man’s life saved in grain bin rescue

By Correne Martin

A grain bin entrapment ended with a man’s life saved on June 28, thanks to the quick thinking of those on-site and the use of a grain bin rescue tube.

According to Boscobel Fire Chief Todd Fischer, emergency officials were called about 5:20 p.m. to the Bailey residence on County M in Watertown Township. David Bailey, 66, had become stuck inside a grain bin and shed structure, where he was surrounded by shelling corn for over an hour before a truck driver pulled in and found him. The driver, Bailey’s son, a neighbor and another individual immediately started placing plywood sheets around Bailey to create a protective barrier for him.

General hospital/Satter building comes down

A good chunk of the former general hospital/Satter building is expected to come down this month. Demolition of the 116-year-old brick building started Tuesday. (Photos by Correne Martin)

By Correne Martin

The former general hospital and O.E. Satter County Building, along Dunn Street, started coming down Tuesday.

Late in 2018, from a sheriff’s sale, Mark Thornburg purchased this property adjacent to the home that’s been in his family’s name since 1967. The asbestos was removed from the old hospital this summer and now the structure is being razed.

Thornburg said he is not looking to sell or develop the land into anything other than a suitable site for his son and wife to build a new home upon.

Toronzo Cannon, story telling Chicago bluesman, to perform at Prairie Dog Fest

By Peyton Meisner

Chicago blues veteran Toronzo Cannon will be making his return to the Prairie Dog Blues Festival, which will be held this weekend, July 26-28. “I’m looking forward to being able to make some new witnesses,” Cannon said.

Cannon was born in Chicago on February 14, 1968, in Chicago. Theresa’s Lounge, one of the city’s most famous South Side blues clubs, was nearby. As a child, Cannon would stand on the sidewalk outside the door, soaking up the live blues pouring out while trying to sneak a glance inside at larger-than-life bluesmen like Junior Wells and Buddy Guy.

Cannon broke into the music scene in the 90’s playing guitar with artists such as Wayne Baker Brooks,  L.V. Banks and Joanna Carter. In 2001, he formed his own band, The Cannonball Express.

Sheila the Draft Horse spreads joy in the community and on social media

Ready has been raising Sheila at their home in rural Eastman since 2014.

Residents at Great River Care Center enjoyed Sheila’s visit in May.

By Peyton Meisner

Sheila is a 16-year-old, 17-plus hand, Belgian draft mare, owned by Shannon Ready since 2014. Ready, who grew up with a love for horses, said she always wanted a draft horse. When she saw an ad on Facebook about a draft horse for sale, she decided to buy the horse. That horse was Sheila, and four years later Ready is very glad they bought her. “You couldn’t ask for a better horse. Sheila has been a blessing to our family. It’s nice for my kids to have the experience of being around a draft horse,” she said.

Sheila is one of the few draft horses in the area, which makes her a unique figure in the community. Sheila currently has her own Facebook page with over 2.8 thousand followers. Ready started the page in 2016 just for fun, but the page has since taken off and drawn a lot of loyal followers.
