Regional housing study to be presented

A presentation of the Regional Housing Study for Crawford County will take place on Monday, Oct. 21 at the Leisure Time Sports Bar and Bowl. A free social half-hour and buffet dinner will commence at 5 p.m., with the presentation starting at 5:30, followed by a discussion and Q&A. An RSVP is required to attend.

The event will provide information from the Crawford County Housing Study that Driftless Development Inc. commissioned in collaboration with Prosperity Southwest Wisconsin and Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Plan Commission (SWWRPC), who conducted the study. Troy Maggied, Executive Director of SWWRPC, will present the findings and guide a discussion on the next steps to seek residential development solutions.

Sharon Ann Nolan

Sharon Ann Nolan, 76, of Rochester, Minn., passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019, at Mayo Clinic Hospital. 

Sharon was born May 9, 1943, in Prairie du Chien, to Dorothy (Woods) and Francis “Ding” Smith. 

She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1961. Sharon married Gene M. Nolan on Oct. 21, 1961, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Sharon and Gene lived in southwest Wisconsin before settling in Rochester, Minn., in 1969. Sharon was an avid reader, especially of religious and political content. She loved tending to her flowers, listening to music, had a lifetime love of boating on the Mississippi River, and enjoyed evening happy hours with her husband. Sharon’s love for her family was as big as her love for the Lord.

Doris E. Clark

Doris E. Clark, 87, of Wauzeka, passed away on Thursday Oct. 3, 2019, at home with her loving family by her side. 

She was born on Oct. 19, 1931, in Basswood, the daughter of Myron and Anna Freeda (Hughbanks) Richardson. 

Doris had a varied career history. She was the lead cook at Riverside Supper Club and a production worker at Advance Transformer for many years. Her last position prior to retirement was as a supervisor at a mental health hospital in Meridian, Miss. Doris was a single mother who raised five deeply devoted children. She took great pride in her expertise in the lost arts of knitting, embroidery and crocheting. She especially enjoyed crocheting afghans for wedding and baby gifts. Doris was a fan of classic film noir and western movies, but most of all she loved to visit with her grandchildren.

JoAnne Peters

JoAnne Peters, 72, of Bagley, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at the Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. 

She was born on April 26, 1947, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Mason and Kathryn (Degenhardt) Evans. 

She married Richard Peters on June 5, 1965, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. JoAnne worked several years at MPC until her retirement. She enjoyed many hobbies, small projects, traveling, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Charles H. Morel

Charles H. Morel, 89, formerly of Muscoda, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at Schmitt Woodland Hills. 

He was born March 26, 1930, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Herman and Mabel (Gokey) Morel. 

Charles served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Theresa Fritsche in Prairie du Chien, and they shared 63 wonderful years together before her passing in 2016. He was a postal clerk and then postmaster serving the Muscoda area for 34 years. 

Charles is survived by children, Steven (Betty), Marilyn Pettit, Michael (Diane) and Cynthia (Michael) Schultz; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by sisters, Wanda Stitely, Gloria (Don) Jones; and extended family and friends.

Citywide fall cleanup in PdC next week

The Prairie du Chien Street Department has scheduled its citywide fall cleanup. 

Property owners on Blackhawk Avenue North will have pickup Monday, Oct. 14. Those on Blackhawk Avenue South, east of Marquette Road, will go on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Then, those on Blackhawk Avenue South, west of Marquette Road, will have items cleaned up Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Street crews will pick up brush, appliances and metal recyclables. Town and Country Sanitation will pick up all other remaining items on the following Saturday, Oct. 19. There will be no return trips. Please make sure to have items out on the appropriate day your location is scheduled for cleanup.

Prairie Industries sells majority interest

Prairie Industries informed its workers on Sept. 23 and 24 that a few days earlier it had sold a majority share of both Prairie Industries and Nu-Pak, in Boscobel, to the Halifax Group.

The approximate 900 jobs are secure and operations are expected to remain the same at the three Prairie du Chien and one Lansing, Iowa, Prairie Industries plants, as well as at Nu-Pak. 

According to their website, “The Halifax Group is a private investment firm dedicated to partnering with founders and managers of lower middle-market businesses with total enterprise values generally between $50 million and $300 million.” The company has 100 years of combined experience and $1.5 billion under management.

The 2019 Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards Program brought about 150 business professionals together for an elegant night Oct. 2, on the Celebration Belle paddlewheel boat. A night cruise on the Mississippi River was enjoyed along with a buffet-style meal and beverages. Chamber President and CEO Bob Moses emceed the event and, along with chamber board president, Nick Coffield, presented the night’s awards.

Wauzeka-Steuben, River Ridge and Seneca competed in the Kickapoo Invitational cross country meet Thursday afternoon.

The Wauzeka-Steuben boys team took third out of 10 teams. Jacob Reichmann finished in second place overall with a time of 17:26.2 over the 5,000-meter course to lead the Hornets. Zach Martin was 12th in 18:29.7. Reed Stenner was 16th in 18:45.4. Isaac Reichmann was 19th in 18:52.8. Nate Martin was 25th in 19:22.9. Chris Reising was 30th in 19:44.2. Jonah Reichmann was 32nd in 19:45.8.
