Seneca girls beat Kickapoo

Seneca hosted Kickapoo in a Ridge and Valley volleyball match Tuesday night. 

Seneca won three games to one by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-23.

Seneca improved to 18-12 on the season and 6-0 in conference action.

Steven 'Mac' Martin

Steven 'Mac' Martin, 63, of Wauzeka, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, at Gundersen Health in La Crosse. 

He was born April 25, 1956, in Mineral Point area. The son of Edwin and Leeta (Johnston) Martin. 

He went to school at Boscobel High School. After high school, he worked for several construction companies. He then went to work as a crane operator for Wick Homes for 25 years. He continued to drive semi trucks for a couple of companies until his retirement. He had a love for cars, Harley Davidson Motorcycles and pyrotechnics. He was a wonderful baker, making homemade bread, cakes, pasty and pies.

John C. 'Jack' Mulrooney

John C. “Jack” Mulrooney, 95, of Prairie du Chien, died on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019. 

Jack was born in Bloomington, on Sept. 27, 1924, the son of Clifford and Harriet (McGrath) Mulrooney. 

He attended St. Mary’s grade school and Bloomington and Boscobel High Schools, graduating from Bloomington in 1942. He attended Loras College for one semester, then served in the Army Air Corps from March of 1943 until October of 1945. He held rank of flight officer–bombardier. After his discharge from service, he enrolled at La Crosse State Teachers College, where he lettered in track three years. He was co-captain of the 1948 track team and served as president of the letterman’s club.

Friday night marked Prairie du Chien football’s annual Senior Night, as the Blackhawks (7-1, 5-1) hosted the Dodgeville Dodgers in the Hawks’ final regular-season home game of the 2019 season. The Dodgers (1-7, 1-5) were unable to move the ball consistently as the PdC defense continued its impressive play. After a monster 2nd quarter in which the Blackhawks scored 30 points, Prairie du Chien never looked back en route to a 58-8 rout of Dodgeville in Week 8.

The Prairie du Chien volleyball team traveled to Lancaster on Thursday night for an SWC match. It was a thriller! 

Lancaster took advantage of a slow start and a lot errors by the Hawks early on to win the first set 25-18. The second set was much closer as the two teams went back and forth, but the Hawks came up short in the second set, 25-23, to go down 2 sets to 0.

Mississippi River floods again, causes road closures

According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River at McGregor crested at 16.77 feet on Saturday. Flood stage is 16 feet. The river is expected to drop slowly.

County N beginning to take shape, Spring Lake Inn doing well despite construction

County N at the intersection with Highway 35 and going up the hill is beginning to take shape. The new turnoff onto County N from Highway 35 will be behind the Spring Lake Inn Motel. Customers of Spring Lake Inn Restaurant can turn off of Highway 35, drive into the construction zone (above) for a short distance behind and around the motel and into the normal parking area. Mary M. Stevenson

Mary M. Stevenson, 82, of Gays Mills, passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, at home after a short battle with cancer. 

Mary was born April 25, 1937, to Melvin and Anna (Anderson) Swenson. 

In 1954, she was united with Stanley Stevenson into marriage that lasted 65 years. She loved to play cards and loved to cook especially for company. She was a hardworking housewife and helped with farm chores. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mary C. Benoy, 79, of Middleton and formerly of Prairie du Chien, entered into Eternal Life on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, at the UW-Madison Hospital and Clinics due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. 

She was born on April 28, 1940, in Crawford County, the daughter of Charles and Evelyn (Garvey) Heisz.

Eleanor A. Chamberlain

Eleanor A. Chamberlain, 94, of Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully on Oct 7, 2019 at Prairie Maison Nursing Home. Eleanor was born June 13, 1925, in Mt. Ida, the daughter of Juanita McGraw and William Howell. 

She graduated from Fennimore High School, the class of 1942. Eleanor married Paul James Chamberlain, of Boscobel, on June 6, 1942, and they made their home in Boscobel for many years.
