Sign up starting for Operation Santa in Crawford County

Operation Santa for Crawford County residents will be offered again for the 2019 season, sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Rotary Club. 

Families in need should sign up between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 at Couleecap in Prairie du Chien or at the village office in Gays Mills. Distribution will be Friday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien.

Traffic stop yields meth related arrests

On Oct. 20, a Crawford County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a white 2000 Chevy Silverado in the city of Prairie du Chien for failing to stop for a stop sign. The deputy identified the driver as Kristian Tesar, 24, Prairie du Chien, and the front passenger as Raymond McCullick, 30, of Prairie du Chien.

On Oct. 27, a Crawford County deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2005 Dodge Ram truck on Main St. in the village of Soldiers Grove. The deputy identified the driver as Kayla Kuykendall, 31, Viola, and the front passenger as Laura Schaller, 32, Soldiers Grove.

Woman has spirited flair for investigating the paranormal

On Halloween, Heather White will probably be watching some paranormal show on television. But she’ll be wishing she were out actually investigating and interacting with spirits herself. 

Originally from Arkansas and now living in Prairie du Chien, Heather began ghost hunting after watching them on TV. She and her ex-husband, who is from this area, thought the mysterious phenomenon was so intriguing that they “bought a digital voice recorder and headed to some cemeteries.”

Heather said her biggest motivation for getting into paranormal investigations was to satisfy her curious mind

There aren’t too many Australian citizens who pass through Prairie du Chien.

Last week, Cameron Collins, 50, came from the coastal city of Clifton Springs, Victoria, to America. 

“I know California and all the movies. I just wanted to get to know middle America and everyday life here,” Collins said.

He came to know about southwest Wisconsin because of his family connection with Jane Achenbach, from Eastman.

Wauzeka-Steuben brings back musical with ‘The Lion King Jr.’

It’s been three years since the last play at Wauzeka-Steuben High School, and it’s unknown when one last happened prior to that. 

This year, students and staff are bringing back a theatrical production with a story that’s sure to be a crowd favorite. 

“The Lion King Jr.” is the Broadway musical selected for a collaborative show featuring about 40 Hornet students in grades K-12. 

“It’s exciting to bring this back in Wauzeka-Steuben,” said Director Shawn Zeeh, a fifth grade teacher in the district who has starred in area community productions himself.

Prairie school tax rate remains $10.66

At its annual budget hearing on Monday evening, the Prairie du Chien School Board approved of a 2019-2020 budget with a total property tax levy of $5,958.203. The levy for 2018-2019 was $5,746,975.

River Ridge gets past Belleville — River Ridge topples Heights

Third-seeded River Ridge beat sixth-seeded and visiting Belleville in a five-set thriller in a Division 3 regional semifinal Thursday night. 

The Lady Timberwolves were victorious by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-14, 11-25, and 15-5 to improve to 20-0 on the season.
