Linda Forst

Linda Forst, 56, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019, at UW Hospital and Clinics. 

She was born on Jan. 7, 1963, in Madison, the daughter of James and Sandy (Burr) Stanley.

Linda graduated from UW-Madison with a bachelor’s degree in education. She married Keith Forst on May 7, 2011, at Olbrich Gardens in Madison and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Linda cherished her time as a kindergarten teacher at Elvehjem Elementary School for over 30 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and coaching bowling to the youth. She was a member of the Badgerland Youth Bowlers Tour, Rolling Thunder Inc., and Madison Bowling Board. Linda also enjoyed step class, reading, and being outdoors with her dogs, Digit and Reno. She loved animals and traveling with her husband.

Irene L. Mitchell

Irene L. Mitchell, 77, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. 

She was born May 28, 1942, the daughter of Charles and Evelyn (Garvey) Heisz. 

She married Fred Plondke and later divorced. She then married Wayne Mitchell on Nov. 28, 1987. Irene was a proud graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in 1960. Irene loved spending time with her grandchildren, spending time with her dog Lilly, watching the Packers and Badgers, and playing a good game of euchre.

Jerold J. 'Jerry' Matousek

Jerold J. “Jerry” Matousek, 67, of Prairie du Chien, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, surrounded by his family at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born on Feb. 6, 1952, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Joseph and Elsie (Perrine) Matousek. He attended and graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1970. He married Judy Zable on Feb. 4, 1978, in St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish.

Thanksgiving meal served, all welcome

A free Thanksgiving dinner will be served to area community members at the Apostalic White House Church in Prairie du Chien on Thursday, Nov. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Dine in at 1300 S. Marquette Rd., take carryouts or order in-town deliveries by calling (608) 306-0469. The church can accommodate about 40 people inside its facility.

All are welcome to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, sweet potatoes, green beans, dessert, coffee, tea, milk and water. Thanks to church and community volunteers, as well as a main donation from Zinkle’s Piggly Wiggly, about 20 people will come together in the days leading up to and the day of Thanksgiving to cook and provide the free meal and opportunity for fellowship.

Car flies over a creek, teenager injured

On Nov. 18, at 7:41 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a one-vehicle rollover crash on State Highway 171 just west of Trout Drive in Clayton Township. 

Wyatt Mickelson, 18, Gays Mills, was westbound on Highway 171 in a 2004 Buick LeSabre. His vehicle left the right side of Highway 171, drove through three fences and went airborne over a creek before coming to rest. Mickelson had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to Vernon Memorial Hospital by Tri-State EMS.

Assisting at the scene were the Wisconsin State Patrol for crash investigation, the Crawford County Highway Department, the Soldiers Grove Fire Department, the Gays Mills Fire Department, North Crawford EMS, Ocooch Mountain Rescue and Fry’s Towing.

Knife allegedly displayed in confrontation

On Saturday, Nov. 16, at approximately 8:49 p.m., the Marquette–McGregor Police Department responded to the parking lot of Casino Queen, in Marquette, Iowa, pertaining to a theft which resulted in a knife being displayed.

An officer observed the vehicle involved and initiated a high risk traffic stop at the intersection of Marquette Drive and First Street. Additional officers from the Prairie du Chien Police Department responded and assisted in securing the occupants of the stopped vehicle.

During the investigation, Brandon L. Burdick, of Prairie du Chien, was accused of stealing money from Derek D. White. White confronted Burdick in the Casino Queen parking lot. During their confrontation, White was accused of displaying a knife. White was located in the Casino Queen parking lot and immediately detained.

RDA proceeds toward blight determination in case of Blackhawk Junction purchase

As the city of Prairie du Chien and Crawford County governments negotiate a potential sale of the Blackhawk Junction property—with the city’s Redevelopment Authority (RDA) as the purchaser—the common council took the first step Tuesday night in authorizing the RDA to proceed with obtaining a blight determination for the property. Making such a determination is necessary in order to carry out redevelopment plans and eliminate the blight, and toward the receipt of a $35,000 cleanup grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

“If the RDA and the county cannot come to an agreement on the property, the process would stop,” said City Planner Garth Frable, during the regular common council meeting.

The K9000 Dog Wash is the first of its kind in the area, installed along Highway 18 in Prairie du Chien and opened in September. 

Shane and Sandy Landt, of Monona, Iowa, made a deal with Gary Welter, of Quality Beverage, to establish the new small business on the south end of the liquor store’s parking lot—between there and Computer Support Plus.

There are two self-serve, user-friendly dog wash bays that make up the interior of the trailer.

City RDA, county negotiating over Blackhawk Junction Mall

The Prairie du Chien Redevelopment Authority (RDA), through the city attorney’s office, made a formal, written offer to buy Blackhawk Junction Mall from Crawford County during the county’s Delinquent Tax Committee meeting Monday morning.
