High school rain garden project receives a boost


This is the area where the first rain garden will be created behind the Performing Arts Center at the high school.

There has been some good news recently for the rain garden project underway at Prairie du Chien High School.

Teacher Diane Colburn said that because of the article published in the Courier Press on Dec. 11, a donor has come forward to help with the project.

The Prairie du Chien-Fennimore gymnastics team hosted Viroqua on Friday night, Jan. 10 in PdC-F’s first dual of the season. 

The girls pieced together an impressive performance, surpassing their Mt. Horeb Invitational score with a 106.900 for the night.

Patricia A. Prochaska

Patricia A. Prochaska, 76, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at the Divine Rehabilitation Center in Fennimore. 

She was born Nov. 19, 1943, in San Pedro, Calif., the daughter of Ambrose and Eleanor (Wilkins) Gleason. 

Patricia was married to Lawrence Prochaska, and they later divorced. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Good Samaritan and later for the Prairie Convalescent Center. Patricia also assisted in the daily operation of the Pine Tree Inn with her partner Chester Barr.

Herman G. Sime

Herman G. Sime, 92, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Ferryville, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020.

Herman was born Nov. 1, 1927, to Herman Sr. and Grace (Helgerson) Sime. After the sixth grade, he stayed home to work on the family farm. He farmed pretty much his whole life, both before and after serving his country in the United States Army. He married Alice Kapanke and together they raised six children. Alice passed away Feb 8, 1971.

Robert J. Heilmann

Robert J. Heilmann, 89, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, at the Gundersen Health System in LaCrosse.

He was born Aug. 27, 1930, in Fennimore, the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Stivarius) Heilmann. 

Robert worked for Voth Oil, Balk’s Sunoco and Harold DuCharme’s DX Station in Prairie du Chien. He later retired after working for many years for the city of Prairie du Chien. 

He is survived by his sons, Chuck (Linda), Terry (Donna) and Doug (Vicki) Heilmann; his sister, Dorothy Trameri; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Fredrick “Fred” Roger Skrade, 92, of Rockford, Ill., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020. 

He was born March 8, 1927, in Eastman, the son of Edwin and Edith (Bonney) Skrade.

Jacquelyn Lamb

Jacquelyn June Lamb, 93, of Farmersburg, passed away in her home on Jan. 6, 2020.  

Jackie was born Jan. 10, 1926, to Fred and Olga (Becker) Ferguson.

She attended Pleasant Ridge School and graduated from McGregor High School in 1943. She went to Chicago to work, and met and married Kenneth Lamb in April of 1947. They lived in Chicago until 1950 when they moved back to the McGregor-Marquette area. In 1956, she began working at Effigy Mounds National Monument, retiring in 1986. Jackie was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She served as the president and sang in the choir. She was also a member of Pocket City American Legion Auxiliary for over 60 years. She loved to knit for everyone. She and Kenny especially enjoyed their retirement years camping in Texas.

Eric Lee was born May 26, 1977, to Steven and Kate (Farley) Troendle in Waukon, Iowa.

Patrice J. Norton

Patrice J. Norton, 67, of Garnavillo, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020. 

She was born March 11, 1952, the daughter of Fred and Marilyn (Boheim) Norton. 

She worked at Advance Transformer and later became a licensed practical nurse for the Mendota Mental Health Institute and Scenic Acres in Elkader, Iowa. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Prairie du Chien. Patrice enjoyed the simple things in life including her close-knit group of friends.

Judith Ann Rodenberg

Judith Ann Rodenberg, 80, of Marquette, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse. 

Judith Ann was born Nov. 13, 1939, to Alfred and Alice (Carlson) Siegele in McGregor, Iowa.

She graduated from McGregor High School. Judith was united in marriage with Frank Rodenberg on June 1, 1957, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in McGregor, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. Judy worked at McGregor Electronics for many years.
