Villa projects move forward, though 2021 tourism season is ‘paused’

Repair work began Oct. 12 to restore deteriorating original limestone and red brick pavers that were placed after initial construction of the Villa Louis, making up the front walkway and path around the mansion. Some of the unrepairable stones will be replaced with historically accurate Dubuque limestone that has similar fossilization patterns to the originals. Lauren Glover, of Archaeological Consulting Services, was on site Tuesday and remarked about some historic nails and porcelain uncovered so far during this project.

The walkway between the billiards and office building, and the mansion, is mostly ripped up and ready for replacement pavers.

Pictured (in the forefront) are tiles of Dubuque limestone that are considered historically accurate enough to replace the originals that aren't good enough to keep in the pathway around the Villa Louis mansion.

The front walkway has been unstable for years, and Villa Louis staff are excited about the opportunity to make it more accessible to all visitors.

The Villa Louis’ Fur Trade Museum focal point currently is a custom-built fiberglass canoe. This is just one of the impressive new interpretive pieces visitors can learn about by touring the restored facility. (Photos by Correne Martin)

Elk wanders onto Wauzeka sheep farm

As of Tuesday afternoon, this 6x6 bull elk had been wandering the Greg and Rhonda Cerven sheep farm in rural Wauzeka for over a week. (Photo by Correne Martin)

The bull elk seemed unintimidated by his new sheep friends on the Cerven farm in rural Wauzeka.

Believed to be a wild elk that wandered south from the Black River Falls area, this bull seemed content to just hang around in a rural Wauzeka field.

The colors and contrast, antler size and spread made this elk a majestic sight to see, especially on a sunny and clear fall day.
