After practicing medicine for almost 40 years at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Dr. Ken Zichal has finally hung up his stethoscope.  His retirement will give him more time to pursue another passion besides medicine—building model tanks.

Carol Glesne-Koppes

Carol A. Glesne-Koppes, 68, of East Dubuque, Illinois, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2016 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. All friends and relatives are invited to a gathering to share their memories of this special lady at C.J. Lanes, Elkader, on Saturday, April 23rd from 4-7 P.M. P lease, no cards or memorials; just your presence will be greatly appreciated. A Celebration of Life in honor of Carol will be held in East Dubuque, Illinois at a later date.

“He’s a grandpa,” she said with a loving smile. “He’s very sincere and wise beyond his years. He gets along with everyone.”

Orlan Sylvester Landsgard, 91, of Gunder, Iowa died Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Barthell OES Home in Decorah, Iowa. Orlan was born on February 25, 1925, on the family farm near Churchtown, west of Lansing, Iowa, to George and Rosina (Torkelson) Landsgard. Orlan was baptized on March 2, 1925, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing, Iowa, and confirmed on June 30, 1940, at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa, by the Rev. S.J. Stranjord. He attended Gunder Country School and graduated from Postville High School.

Gwen Kennedy

Gwen Kennedy, 85, former Elkader resident, died Thursday, March 3, 2016, at Victorian Manor in Pace, Florida. She was born in Elkport, IA to Homer D and Violet E (Duwe) Beck. She was baptized in her home by Reverend Paul Kitterer in 1937 and was confirmed at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Guttenberg in 1944.  She graduated from Elkader Public School in May 1948.  In July 1969, she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from Area 1 Voc-Tech School in Calmar, Iowa. Gwen had a passion for caring for people and worked as an aide and nurse in hospitals in Iowa (Elkader and West Union) and in West Palm Beach, FL. She retired in 1993 after 32 years of nursing.
